Did Becki Falwell Prey on Liberty University Students For Sexual Purposes? A Troubling Story of Forced Oral Sex in Politico Raises the Question

A disturbing story is broken by Brandon Ambrosino at Politico. According to the story Becki Falwell allegedly forced herself on a Liberty University story and performed oral sex. If true, then Becki Falwell is a predator and this is not the only situation with Becki at Liberty University.

“The predator wants your silence. It feeds their power, entitlement, and they want it to feed your shame.”

Viola Davis

Becki Falwell

Before this blog starts I am going to ask you to watch the above video. Watch what people say about Becki Falwell and how involved she gets into student lives at Liberty and her personal interactions. Fresh allegations make the above video deeply disturbing.

Politico Reports of Becki Falwell Forcing Oral Sex on a Liberty University Student

In 2008 Becki Falwell forced herself into the bed of a Liberty University student and performed oral sex against their will. This happened in 2008 with a Liberty University student staying in the Falwell home in Lynchburg, Virginia. Brandon Ambrosino breaks this story in a Politico article called,‘She was the aggressor’: Former Liberty student alleges sexual encounter with Becki Falwell.” The article goes on and discusses how aggressive Becki Falwell is when it comes to pursuing people against their will. And to back it up Ambrosino had he story backed up with Facebook messages from Becki with the Liberty student. Becki was called “the aggressor” The former Liberty student who did not finish was racked with guilt and feared harming the Falwell family. The take away from this story is that Becki Falwell is an alleged sexual predator. And if this is true there are many other people who have been harmed at Liberty. Why? When it comes to predators there is never just one victim. There are many more. In writing about evangelical scandal and toxic churches that has been learned.

Often, the band would practice into the evening. Some nights, it would just be the then-student and Trey jamming together. “I was working weird hours at a restaurant, so I wasn’t around when Trey and [the then-student] would chill,” the former bandmate told POLITICO. Trey Falwell and the former student would stay up drinking whiskey and picking out tunes on their guitars until the early morning. If it was really late, or if he’d had too much to drink, the then-student would spend the night, crashing on the bed from a fold-out couch in the guest room next to Trey’s bedroom.

“One night [in August or September], we were up till one or two, and we went back to his room. We had a decent amount of Jack Daniels,” the former student said. He remembered walking into the guest room, just as he’d done many times, closing the door behind him, and preparing the bed.

“I’m laying in the bed and I hear, like, giggling to the side of me on the floor. And, pardon my French, but I was like, ‘What the fuck is that?’ I look over and it’s Becki,” he said. “Just, you know, in my room. I’m like, ‘You can’t be in here. This can’t happen.’”

He was a 22-year-old student at Liberty. She was the wife of the president of the school. The Falwells were, effectively, the First Family of conservative evangelicalism in America.

After some prodding, he coaxed Falwell into leaving. He slept, woke up and acted like things were normal.

A few nights later, he stayed the night again. Again, Falwell came into the guestroom where the then-student was in bed.

This time, she was more aggressive. The former student remembers that Falwell climbed into bed with him, and quickly took down his pants.

“I was like, ‘uh, what are you doing?” the former student said. Falwell then proceeded to give him oral sex.

Over the last year, the former student has recounted this story several times in interviews with POLITICO. He maintained that while some of the details from the 12-year-old encounter are fuzzy, there are others that are clear. He remembers lying on the “right side of the cot.” He remembers thinking the room “looked like an Embassy Suites.” He remembers that Jerry Jr. was away that weekend, and that Wesley, the Falwells’ second son, wasn’t there.

Also clear is the fallout. The encounter, the former student said, “really put a hurt on [me] because I trusted her as a friend.”

In the case of this then-student, these feelings were compounded by Becki Falwell’s position at Liberty University, and in Evangelical Christianity more broadly. He was concerned that word would get out, and that he would in some way be responsible for any injury that would besmear the legacy of Jerry Falwell Sr., who had died a year earlier.

So he kept the sexual encounter secret, save for a few close friends. He said he did not tell Trey Falwell what his mother had done. But the encounter had changed the dynamic between them.

Its a sad and disturbing story by Politico and this blog would encourage you to read it,

  1. And The Cuck & Cougar Show keeps going — stay tuned for further developments!

I notice Christian Cougar did it “Clinton Style”. (Or should that be “Driscoll Style”?) Now she can wipe her mouth and announce “I Have Not Sinned. I Did Not Know Him In The Biblical Sense.”

  2. Two thoughts occur to me from this.

The first is a familiar one: when someone is a sex addict, they can’t be trusted alone with a potential victim. (And someone who commits sexual assault is certainly an addict. They didn’t just wake up one day and decide to go break their marriage vows. It was a long road to get to that point.) An addict is experienced and effective at lying and pretending that everything is OK. This is why, sad as it is, we cannot afford to actually trust a reformed sex addict. Maybe they are healed, and by the grace of God, that’s wonderful. Or maybe they are just pretending and we are all fooled because they are so good at it. People in this situation can and have fooled their spouses for years, so the church should not be deceived into thinking that it can tell when someone in a trusted ministry position is telling the truth. That doesn’t mean that you don’t use the person for ministry ever again; it means that you don’t give them an opportunity to offend ever again. Structure things so that volunteers are in pairs and there is always accountability. Don’t ever let the reformed child molester take a child to the bathroom alone. I’m not saying this story could have been prevented by someone; I’m saying it illustrates how predators behave.

Secondly, we need to be able to better recognize the signs of an aggressor and protect ourselves from them. If the victim in the story related in this post knew the things back then that he knows now, after the first creepy incident where the aggressor was in his room, he never would have gone back to that house without another person to watch his back. This is not blaming the victim, this is blaming inadequate preparation for dangerous situations. Dangerous situations sometimes take us by surprise.

A Liberty U student would have most likely grown up in the Christianese Purity Culture bubble. AND This was the Wife of a CHRISTIAN Leader. It would have been totally unthinkable that this could possibly happen. This was something “Only The Goyim Would Do”, NOT the Godly Winsome Wife of a Godly CHRISTIAN Celebrity Leader/semi-Divine Hero Figure. And he got blindsided. “THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING” blindsided.

This is not blaming the victim, this is blaming inadequate preparation for dangerous situations. Dangerous situations sometimes take us by surprise.

Especially when we’re completely unprepared for the situation. Especially when up until it happens it has been a Completely IMPOSSIBLE Situation. I am not the only one to think that the Christianese Bubble and Purity Culture pre-grooms them to be victims. It’s not just the sexual predator grooming his or her target, but the entire subculture.

Yes, the pretense that everything is perfect, which is not just the Christianese bubble, but also describes one of the central problems with social media. The version of a person that is presented is totally fake.

This is the same reason that so many churches, and the Catholic church, and public schools, made horrific errors responding to sex scandals. They were completely unprepared and they didn’t realize the reality of the situation. They didn’t understand the nature of the problem.

(Some say that exactly describes the church’s reaction to pornography today.)

And if you think about it, church leadership should have had no excuse. The Bible is full of sex scandals. It’s not like people in power looking for victims or committing sex crimes is a new phenomenon. It’s not like covering up scandals has ever actually worked. Martin Luther was involved in a sex scandal (he gave bad advice to a bigamist nobleman). I listened to a podcast this week about the Levitical laws covering such things and even in the ancient near east, sexual shenanigans were a problem. When someone comes into a position of power and authority, be it in the church or not, they should have the expectation that there are sexual shenanigans going on all the time, and plan accordingly.

A statistic I’ve heard is that 50% of evangelical pastors have current or past struggles with sexual sin. Maybe the thought is, “I’ve gotten away so far with hiding my own sin, so maybe I’ll get away with covering up this scandal.” Nobody gets away with it forever though. It always comes out in the end. The victims grow up and get angry, or worse, become offenders themselves.
