Tom Allchin wrote an article for the Biblical Counseling Center saying that not all churches are that bad. Tim, who used to come from Harvest Bible Chapel Naperville (Today Highpoint) reveals in the article that he just doesn’t get it. I guess living in the bubble will do that to you. This article offers a response and says that it is much worse than Tim will admit. When you consider the Harvest Bible Chapel fiasco, combined with Sovereign Grace Ministries and Acts 29 issues the evangelical church is in a state of crisis and deeply corrupt. Perhaps its hard for someone like Tim who draws a paycheck from the evangelical industrial complex to actually admit this issue.
This is an article that reflects on an older post from Mike Anderson who led The Resurgence at Mars Hill in Seattle. What do you do when religion leads you to places that are dark and to behaviors just as destructive as alcoholism or drug addiction? This also reflects on what I have seen in my own life. On September 30, 2018 Justin Pearson of Sojourn Fairfax gave a sermon on joyful partnership. In the talk he also explained why you covenant with the local church, and encouraged people to covenant with Sojourn Fairfax. The message was disturbing in several ways. First of all Justin is ignoring the covenant scandals out of Matt Chandler’s The Village Church or Bryan Laughlin’s Remnant Church in Richmond, Virginia. Also what the members of Sojourn Fairfax need to understand is that while they will be subjected to church discipline, Justin Pearson and Edward Hunt are above church discipline and it doesn’t apply to them. The Sojourn movement broke away from the Acts 29 movement when Mars Hill Seattle under Mark Driscoll was in the process of implosion. It started out of Sojourn Community Church in Louisville under the leadership of Daniel Montgomery and Mike Cosper. A few years later the Sojourn Network was started and Brian Howard was its first director. The Sojourn Network is deeply influenced by C.J. Mahaney’s Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM). Dave Harvey came to Sojourn after his long history with SGM. This is a network that is growing in the United States and due to its roots and influence by SGM, also a network of concern. The Washington Post had a deep and long article about sexual abuse inside evangelical Christianity. The article looks at different situations and is one of the best reads I have seen in a while. This is a brief post Continue reading
The Wondering Eagle would like to transition from a one person blog to a team that can write about a number of issues. Those issues include atheism, doubt, Neo-Calvinism, the EFCA, Mark Dever’s Capitol Hill Baptist Church and issues in evangelicalism. I would like to bring on a diverse set of people in time who would have freedom to publish what is on their mind. If you are interested please drop me a note and let’s figure out a way forward. After a First Evangelical Free Church members meeting in Wichita, Kansas in January of 2016 questions were asked about the EFCA denomination. On the church blog that particular EFCA church wrote a post about learning about the EFCA. I want to use that post to roll out my goals and hopes in terms of encouraging reform in the EFCA. In this post you will find what I believe needs to be done to make the EFCA stronger and healthier in the course of time. Continue reading
