Mark Dever celebrated being a pastor for 25 years at Capitol Hill Baptist Church on September 22, 2019. This blog had a solid source who conveyed quite a bit about the culture and issues at Capitol Hill Baptist Church. But in the end how should Mark Dever be remembered? He should be remembered for his autocratic theology and his authoritarianism. Continue reading
This is the final post for The Wondering Eagle for 2018. This article reviews the stories and situations covered in the year of 2018. From Acts 29, to the EFCA to the Sojourn Network, the atheist community and Harvest Bible Chapel. This is a wrap up of all the work this blog accomplished. Plus I discuss what is coming in 2019 as well.
This is an article that reflects on an older post from Mike Anderson who led The Resurgence at Mars Hill in Seattle. What do you do when religion leads you to places that are dark and to behaviors just as destructive as alcoholism or drug addiction? This also reflects on what I have seen in my own life. Does evangelical Christian culture drive people to embrace pornography? Plus looking at the harm that accountability relationships do to people. In my life accountability led to three painful situations. It destroyed one friendship from Campus Crusade in Wisconsin. Helping someone from Sovereign Grace’s Redeemer Arlington with accountability as an agnostic backfired as I faced a false accusation from someone who was frightened about adult pornography. And at Fairfax Community Church I learned how unhealthy churches can potentially use confessed material against people. And this happens while celebrity pastors like Mark Driscoll or C.J. Mahaney are not held accountable. Today’s post at The Wondering Eagle is about a warped aspect in evangelical culture. Continue reading
An open letter to Del Ray Baptist’s Lead Pastor on his effort to try and get Mike Pence canceled from the SBC meeting. The Wondering Eagle is encouraged by Garrett’s efforts in this area. This post is a reflection on the issues of mixing politics and faith. At the same time this also is a reflection on the problem of tribalism which is also an issue in 9 Marks. Continue reading
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) had their regular meeting in Dallas, Texas. And in an incredibly embarrassing move the SBC had Mike Pence speak. The controversial Vice President turned the opportunity into a political speech about Donald Trump. If I were a SBC pastor I would be deeply embarrassed to be affiliated with the SBC. Today’s post looks at how Garrett Kell from Del Ray Baptist here in the D.C. area tried to get Pence canceled. Plus John Fea offered some great analysis on the situation. Finally from my perspective I am arriving at the conclusion that for many evangelicals faith is not about following God, instead its a political party where “faith” is just a means to an end. The Washington Post published an article about how evangelical Christians are in denial about sex abuse inside evangelicalism. The article tells the story of Rachael Denhollander and how she had to leave Ryan Fullerton’s Immanuel Baptist in Louisville, Kentucky. In response Immanuel contacted The Washington Post and admitted that they were wrong. The statement has some problems, but Immanuel should be encouraged for taking this act and admitting error. Its a step in the right direction for this key 9 Marks church. Continue reading
