An Overview of the Sojourn Network out of Louisville, Kentucky

The Sojourn movement broke away from the Acts 29 movement when Mars Hill Seattle under Mark Driscoll was in the process of implosion. It started out of Sojourn Community Church in Louisville under the leadership of Daniel Montgomery and Mike Cosper. A few years later the Sojourn Network was started and Brian Howard was its first director. The Sojourn Network is deeply influenced by C.J. Mahaney’s Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM).  Dave Harvey came to Sojourn after his long history with SGM. This is a network that is growing in the United States and due to its roots and influence by SGM, also a network of concern.  Continue reading

This post is an overview of the issues that popped up at McLean Bible (MBC) a mega church in the Washington, D.C. area in the 2015 until 2017 time-frame that revealed MBC was being theologically hijacked. The Wondering Eagle picked up on many of the issues over the course of time. This post also contains a list of questions that need to be answered and what I believe is going to happen to MBC in the 2018 to 2020 time-frame.  Continue reading

Do You Want to Write? I Would like to Build a Diverse Independent Team that Can Write The Wondering Eagle

The Wondering Eagle would like to transition from a one person blog to a team that can write about a number of issues. Those issues include atheism, doubt, Neo-Calvinism, the EFCA, Mark Dever’s Capitol Hill Baptist Church and issues in evangelicalism. I would like to bring on a diverse set of people in time who would have freedom to publish what is on their mind. If you are interested please drop me a note and let’s figure out a way forward.  Continue reading

An Open Letter to Andrew Hoffman (Multiplication Catalyst for ECFA’s Western District on Why Its Time to Admit that the Neo-Calvinist Movement Has Failed…)

An open letter to the Multiplication Catalyst of The Western District. Andrew Hoffman who is involved in The Gospel Coalition of the Bay Area gets a frank letter on why the Neo-Calvinist movement is a failure, and why its run its course. From Mark Driscoll talking about the Biblical basis of blowjobs, to C.J. Mahaney’s SGM scandal and allegations of covering up child sex abuse, to D.A. Carson attacking a rape victim; to my brush with Eric Simmons Redeemer Arlington. The days of The Gospel Coalition and the Neo-Calvinist movement are over. Its time to admit that it has failed and move forward.  Continue reading

Sam Emadi’s Disturbing 9 Marks Article Helps Explain Why Neo-Calvinism Struggles with Spiritual Abuse and Why One Should Expect More Scandals

A deeply disturbing article on 9 Marks illustrates why Neo-Calvinist churches are incubators for abuse and problems. First they have a warped view of membership and second they expect people to stay and ride out difficulties. This article helps me understand why Matt Chandler’s The Village Church attempted to place a women who annulled her marriage to a child pornography addict under church discipline. 9 Marks churches are guaranteed to be abuse factories, and Sam Emadi from Third Avenue Baptist in Louisville explains why.  Continue reading

Cherrydale Baptist and The Gospel Coalition; Plus Why Would a Victim of Sexual Assault want to Call Steve King’s Church Home?

This post looks at Cherrydale Baptist which is an independent Baptist church in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Arlington, Virginia. This post looks at this Gospel Coalition church and asks the question…why would a victim of sexual assault want to attend Steve King’s church? After all when The Gospel Coalition seeks to defend C.J. Mahaney when all the allegations of criminal activity pour of out Sovereign Grace, why would a victim of sexual assault want to attend a Gospel Coalition church?  Today’s post marks the beginning of The Wondering Eagle writing about Cherrydale Baptist Church as issues develop.  Continue reading

Is Neo-Calvinism Creating Mini Popes and a Misapplication of Scripture?

A comment by Daniel Roueche at Nate Sparks Facebook page leads to this quick and brief post. Its an honest question about how sustainable is Neo-Calvinist application of  theology in the end? What is its legacy for abuse, poor theology, and in the process creating a mini-Rome? I’ll let you guys discuss this below. Another post is going up later today. Continue reading

Why Write about Church Corruption, Systemic and Systematic Issues? Lessons from the Creation of the National Park Service in 1916

The National Park Service turns 100 this month. Over a century ago a number of people had the vision, and drive to preserve national parks. They ran into difficulty, and went against the culture at the time. In time they convinced others that places like Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and others deserved protection. Religious bloggers are similar in that we love the church too much to keep it as is. We love the church and write and endure difficulty so that others will not. We write so that a person can attend an Evangelical Free Church or Southern Baptist Church in 2050 and worship in peace. Continue reading

John Piper and Guns: How the Celebrity Pastor Movement is Crippling People’s Faith

John Piper recently ignited controversy when tackling the topic of whether or not a Christian should arm themselves. This post is not about the debate on guns, instead I want this to be a discussion on how Christians are being stunted in their faith by the celebrity pastor culture. Too many people are being told what to think and not how to think. Christians need to be encouraged to wrestle with questions themselves as that would better prepare them for life. This post is about how the celebrity pastor is crippling and handicapping Christians today. Continue reading
