At the Baptist News Global there was an op-ed by Mark Wingfield. The article looked at why the evangelical Christian church needs to admit when its wrong. This is a theme I keep bumping up against here. In addition Mark addresses areas where there should be discussion. This article raises some issues that honestly need to be discussed.
This is the final post for The Wondering Eagle for 2018. This article reviews the stories and situations covered in the year of 2018. From Acts 29, to the EFCA to the Sojourn Network, the atheist community and Harvest Bible Chapel. This is a wrap up of all the work this blog accomplished. Plus I discuss what is coming in 2019 as well.
This is an article that reflects on an older post from Mike Anderson who led The Resurgence at Mars Hill in Seattle. What do you do when religion leads you to places that are dark and to behaviors just as destructive as alcoholism or drug addiction? This also reflects on what I have seen in my own life. An employee in Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) uses Crawford Loritts in a Cru video. Many evangelicals are flippant and cheap when it comes to prayer. This has been reinforced by my past efforts in contacting churches and asking for prayer as I tried to bounce back during a dark season of my life. Then I saw The Bridge Fresno (my former EFCA Church) bungle a prayer request as my Mom was dying in the nearby hospital. This post looks at issues with evangelical Christians and prayer. At The Gospel Coalition recently Bill Riedel from Acts 29/EFCA’s Redemption Hill in Washington, D.C., wrote an article about how to plant a church and having it be politically diverse. This article looks at what the Acts 29 pastor said and raises some questions. While I agree the church can address politics and should not be partisan, the warped view of injustice that this Acts 29 pastor has is an issue that needs to be addressed. Continue reading
This is an overview of the General Counsel of the Southern Baptist’s International Missions Board, Derek Gaubatz. Gaubatz played a role in covering up a sexual assault scandal in the IMB by encouraging Anne Marie Miller to let it go. Mark Aderholt, a sexual predator was allowed to go to another church in the SBC and have access to children. This post looks at how Derek Gaubazt acted, especially in light of contacting federal authorities about alleged financial crimes in the Brady Nurse scandal. The question I would like to pose to a veteran attorney of the evangelical culture wars is this. Does “religious freedom” include the right to cover up sexual assault in the SBC? Continue reading
A disturbing scandal comes out of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Missions Board (IMB). Its the story of Anne Marie Miller and Mark Aderholt. Aderholt was a student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary who groomed and sexually abused Anne, Anne in time realized the severity of the situation and the IMB was notified. They did an investigation but did not report Aderholt’s alleged abuse to law enforcement. As a result of the #MeToo situation Anne had the courage to file a report to Arlington Police in Texas. Today’s The Wondering Eagle looks at this disturbing story. Continue reading
Redwood Falls Evangelical Free is a small EFCA church in Southwestern Minnesota. On their website they published their abuse reporting documents. In their follow up the church makes a decision about reporting abuse to police or the appropriate government agency. The Wondering Eagle believes this is a good environment for child sex abuse cover up to occur in. Today’s post deals not only with the difficult topic of child sex abuse but also domestic abuse and elderly abuse. Today’s post asks the question does the EFCA struggle with child sex abuse?
