Reflecting on the Los Angeles Riots in 1992 and How I Came to Accept White Privilege Exists

This post is a reflection on the Los Angeles riots in 1992 and the Rodney King beating. As a white person my views changed with time and I came to realize how the Rodney King beating was racially unjust. Also with me being the first can we have a discussion on white privilege? From being in evangelical churches to moving and living in different parts of the country. This post is how I came to realize that white privilege exists.  Continue reading

This Thanksgiving Here is What I am Thankful for Today

Technically this is the second Thanksgiving after the death of my Dad. But in reality it feels like the first. Amidst this season of pain and loss I learned something last night that brought a smile to my face and made me thankful. Its Eric Paul’s haircut. After fighting leukemia at Stanford Medical Center the disease is in remission and he is resuming his life. He posted about getting a haircut yesterday. So I am thankful for that haircut and Eric’s health bouncing back. Its most welcome to hear good news and I am happy for him,  his wife Michelle and his family. Continue reading

In Order to Understand Evangelical Culture One Should Cease Reading their Bible and Read George Orwell Instead

In order to understand evangelical Christian culture one should read, study and pay attention to the themes from George Orwell in his classic novels. The themes of corruption, totalitarianism, censorship, blind loyalty, and more are used to paint warning to society. Because remember comrade, while all animals are equal some like your pastor are more equal than others.  Continue reading

#Youngerself. What Advice Would I Give Myself at 25?

Recently on Twitter there was a hastag of what you could tell yourself at the age of 25. Many people posted a lot of ideas they wish they could advise their younger self. This is my open letter to my younger self. This is coming from someone  in their 40’s. The basic theme of the letter? Dave, stay away from Evangelical Christianity. If you stay away you will spare yourself a lot of pain and trauma. This is what l would say to myself if l could. Continue reading

What are the Take Aways From the Newest Scandal at Matt Chandler’s The Village Church Involving the Allegation of Matt Tonne’s Sexual Abuse of a Minor?

This post looks at the take aways of the issues from the latest scandal at Matt Chandler’s The Village Church. Matt Chandler’s The Village is alleged to have mishandled a child sex abuse situation with a pastor on staff who is accused of sexually preying on a minor. There are many lessons to consider from the scandal. That includes the issues of child sex abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention, to problems with church discipline and membership covenants.  Other questions raised include the culture of Acts 29 at ground zero thus spreading through the network to the problems with the celebrity pastor model and how the brand is to be protected is is more important than the safety of a child. Unless You Experience Spiritual Abuse Then You Won’t Understand How Painful it is

Spiritual abuse is not something you will understand unless you have endured it. My hope is that you can dismiss this post. But those of you who have been through hell will understand what I am writing here today. This is about how spiritual abuse touched my life. From several churches that dealt with issues from child sex abuse to mishandling a sex offender; to an Air Force Officer who tried to get me involved in the last church plant of Sovereign Grace Ministries in the Washington, D.C. area called Redeemer Arlington. Its the story of a false accusation that threatened my life and hurt my family and even popped up in a hospital room in a medical crisis. In my view spiritual abuse is the equivalent of rape.  Continue reading

Advice for The Well Community Church in Fresno, California as they Want to Reset

Recently The Well Community Church in Fresno, California did a sermon that explained how they want to reset. The purpose of this post is to teach The Well lessons that I have learned in writing about the EFCA, Neo-Calvinism and scandal across the United States. If The Well incorporates some of these ideas they will become healthier and better in the long course of time.
