While a number of traditional evangelicals who mix faith and Christian nationalism reject face masks its a different situation among the Neo-Calvinists. Over at The Gospel Coalition there have been calls for Christians to wear face masks. In some ways its been open like Brett McCracken’s article, in other’s its through Joe Carter reminding people what the Centers for Disease Control states. Or in the case of Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra its writing about how a number of Neo-Calvinist churches encourage people to wear face masks. There are a number of stories emerging that reveal how COVID-19 outbreaks can be tied back to evangelical churches. Many clamored to re-open only to become tools to transmit the virus. This blog was noticing this development when the New York Times published an article about this issue on July 8, 2020. The Tragic Death of Carsyn Leigh Davis Who Attended a Party at First Assembly of God in Fort Myers, Florida and Contracted COVID-19

A dark story comes out of an Assembly of God Church in Fort Myers, Florida. In the middle of a pandemic a mother takes her immune compromised daughter to a church party at First Assembly of God Fort Myers where she contracts COVID-19. It also turns out that the mother who is allegedly into Christian nationalism and junk science then administers the discredited drug  hydroxychloroquine to her daughter. Two days after her 17th birthday Carysn Davis died  in an ICU and remains one of the youngest fatalities of the COVID-19 pandemic in Florida. A child is dead in Florida and it could have been prevented. This is a story that highlights why evangelicalism is so flawed as junk science, evangelical culture, and Christian nationalism are woven together in this tragedy. Continue reading

Russell Moore on Protecting the Elderly in the COVID-19 Pandemic. Reflecting on an Older New York Times Op-Ed in Light of the Growing Coronavirus Situation in Texas

Back in March some of the Christian nationalists were arguing that it was okay to sacrifice the elderly for the sake of the economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said that it was time for the elderly to be sacrificed. That they should die for the sake of their grandchildren. Against that train of thought Russell Moore of the Southern Baptist’s Ethic’s and Religious Liberty Commission responded in a New York Times op-ed. Today, over three months later the United States is watching a growing disaster take place in Texas with a soaring COVID-19 infection starting to overwhelm the system.
