Russell Moore on Protecting the Elderly in the COVID-19 Pandemic. Reflecting on an Older New York Times Op-Ed in Light of the Growing Coronavirus Situation in Texas

Back in March some of the Christian nationalists were arguing that it was okay to sacrifice the elderly for the sake of the economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said that it was time for the elderly to be sacrificed. That they should die for the sake of their grandchildren. Against that train of thought Russell Moore of the Southern Baptist’s Ethic’s and Religious Liberty Commission responded in a New York Times op-ed. Today, over three months later the United States is watching a growing disaster take place in Texas with a soaring COVID-19 infection starting to overwhelm the system. This post looks at what Russell Moore argued and reveals how his words have aged well. In contrast the Christian nationalists have not. Continue reading

The Lonely Death of Nan Durrett From COVID-19 as Told in Baptist News Global

In the Baptist New Global they had a disturbing article about someone dealing with COVID-19. How she became infected and how she died isolated and alone. Its hard to read but the op-ed points to how the United States needs to take better care of seniors. And from my point of view it also illustrates why the COVID-19 virus needs to be taken seriously. A virus will not discriminate  between young and old. Black or white. A virus like this doesn’t care and will leave a lot of death in its wake. Continue reading

Jay Pound of First Evangelical Free of Minneapolis Reflects on His Brother’s Death to Cancer

Jay Pound of First Free Minneapolis wrote a blog post last year reflecting on his brother’s death to cancer at the age of 22. Its a hard topic but this blog respects Jay Pound for writing about it. This post looks at the question of why and while I don’t go the path Jay Pound does its good that this difficult topic is being considered.  Continue reading

Why John Piper Would be a Miserable Comforter for New York City Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

As New York City deals with the COVID-19 pandemic John Piper has a message for the Big Apple. Again, as always Piper reveals as to how he is a miserable comforter. This time its New York City that gets the “good news.” The message is God is sovereign and yes, he strikes people down in sin. Or in other words God is a tyrant and people are nothing but puppets on a string to appease a narcissistic bully. Don’t you just find that comforting?  Continue reading

Considering Ravi Zacharias and his Passing. Do Evangelical Leaders Think of Death and Funerals? Or are the Pewsitters the Only Ones Guilted Regularly About Death?

Ravi Zacharias has died and with his death evangelicals are singing his praises. Evangelical scandal has changed and now follows people to the grave where their dishonesty remains. Dishonest in life means being dishonest in death. When Jesus says, “Well done good and faith servant” what do you do when evangelicals embrace a man who was dishonest about his education and engaged in sexting during an emotional affair with a married woman? Evangelicals ignore scandal and this blog dealt with this issue when David Powlison of Christian Counseling and Education Foundation died. But can you imagine when the funerals are held for Mark Driscoll, C.J. Mahaney, and James MacDonald one day how much lying will take place? Continue reading

How Kentucky Dealt With Christians Who Violated Health Rules and Went to Church During a Pandemic. Plus an Ethical Question: Should Evangelicals Who Spurn Health Law Designed to Keep People Safe Receive Medical Treatment When They Become Ill with COVID-19?

Some evangelicals continued to wage their culture wars in Kentucky when Governor Andy Beshear ordered law enforcement to take down license plates of Christians who gathered in church in violation of health rules during a pandemic. This post looks at the situation and also raises an ethical question. Should evangelicals who spurn public health guidance and have contempt for the law be eligible for medical treatment after they get sick with the coronavirus?  Continue reading

When Fox News Competes Against the Pastor in the COVID-19 Era. Also When the Coronavirus Epidemic is Over What Will the Death Toll Be for White Evangelicals Who Consume Fox?

There was an article in the Washington Post recently that described how a pastor competed against Fox News and the “conservative” media which claimed the coronavirus is a hoax. What do you do when the Fox News competes against a pastor and the Bible is nothing more than a prop. Its not the word of God, its just a prop for display? This blog would like to pose the question when the COVID-19 pandemic is in the history books will white Evangelical Christians have died at a much higher rate due to their dependence on Fox News? Is the Southern Baptists about to needlessly lose a significant part of their convention especially if the United States starts to turn like Italy?  Continue reading
