Recently Evangelical Christians in Wisconsin have received some troubling press in the Boston Globe and the London Guardian. The publicity which is embarrassing discusses how white evangelicals in Wisconsin are worshiping Donald Trump over Jesus. I once called Wisconsin home and today stand horrified by what has developed. In addition the behavior of white evangelicals that I once knew from people like Steve Papez of Milwaukee Metro Crusade or Russell Schmaltz from Elmbrook further highlight these issues or of how some evangelicals are turning a blind eye. As I continue to push back from this stream of evangelicalism I have to grapple as to how the formative years of my life – my 20’s- were wasted in planting a Crusade chapter at Marquette University as well as being involved in churches like Wooded Hills and others. This blog entry is in part a post-mortem as to why I am pushing back from evangelicalism. Continue reading
Elmbrook Church in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield made The Washington Post this past week. After the Christianity Today editorial calling for Donald Trump to resign the Post went to Elmbrook Church to ask attenders what they thought of the editorial. The responses were varied but they highlighted the issues today with Evangelical Christianity. In the fact that people don’t come forward and criticize Trump’s mocking the disabled or the boasting of sexual assault, well it is another illustration of why religion can be corrupt. After all if those who claim to follow Jesus, and be a new creation or born again can’t communicate the basics of their faith then why do places like Elmbrook exist?
The Washington Post ran an article in late December of 2019 that discussed Elmbrook Church and the Christianity Today editorial regarding Donald Trump. I am adding that article to this blog’s achieves about Elmbrook as I continue to write about this church. Continue reading
This is the story of how I became a whistle blower at Fairfax Community Church. Back in 2014 while involved I stumbled across information that Rod Stafford’s church concealed a dangerous situation from the congregation. Their Care Director at the time – Eric Nickle – was on the Virginia Sex Offender Registry. This post is about how I went public, how I struggled with it, and how coming from a church in Milwaukee – Elmbrook, which had a sexual abuse situation with their youth pastor committing suicide in 1999 compelled me to tip off the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. My conscious is clear and if something happens at Fairfax Community it won’t be because I stayed silent. Continue reading
In order to understand evangelical Christian culture one should read, study and pay attention to the themes from George Orwell in his classic novels. The themes of corruption, totalitarianism, censorship, blind loyalty, and more are used to paint warning to society. Because remember comrade, while all animals are equal some like your pastor are more equal than others. Continue reading
This is a letter of divorce to my former third wave evangelical church outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Known as Wooded Hills this is a church that is deeply charismatic, highly political, and very much toxic. In 2016 a number of people attacked me on social media and I realized that this is not the place that I thought it to be. This is a cult and a place to be avoided. This open letter explains a number of problems with Wooded Hills. Continue reading
Spiritual abuse is not something you will understand unless you have endured it. My hope is that you can dismiss this post. But those of you who have been through hell will understand what I am writing here today. This is about how spiritual abuse touched my life. From several churches that dealt with issues from child sex abuse to mishandling a sex offender; to an Air Force Officer who tried to get me involved in the last church plant of Sovereign Grace Ministries in the Washington, D.C. area called Redeemer Arlington. Its the story of a false accusation that threatened my life and hurt my family and even popped up in a hospital room in a medical crisis. In my view spiritual abuse is the equivalent of rape.
