Learning to Hate Yourself. A Reflection on the Forever War Against Lust and Pornography Among Men in Evangelical Culture and the Destroyed Lives Left Behind

The New York Times has been writing about the profile of the Atlanta shooter and his “sexual addiction” battles against pornography and lust. Anyone who spent time in evangelicalism will identify with his purity battles that he dealt with.  In the “forever war” against pornography the battle with lust is long, exhausting and soul crushing.  Males inside evangelicalism realize that they often can’t win. And they are also caught in the dilemma of wanting to date but fearing of becoming sexually active while they do. Accountability is often a means of control and a weapon used by people in ministry. The culture against porn often uses fear and warns that if you look at pornography you too will become just like Ted Bundy and a serial killer hunting women down out of compulsion. Its known as the “forever war” and in evangelicalism it leads to PTSD, anxiety and other issues. Continue reading

At This Point the Emphasis Needs to be the Deconstruction of Evangelicalism. If You Stay an Evangelical Christian Despite the Constant Scandals and Problems I Would Honestly Question Your Faith

This is a haunting post to write but its another necessary one as I do an autopsy on my dying faith. For so many years I spent time building up churches and ministries as I was part of the evangelical machine. Today I am committed to their deconstruction Marquette University’s Cru being on the top of the list. But there is more especially in light of the constant scandals and problems at the churches and ministries I raise in this post. If you go to these churches like McLean Bible, Fairfax Community Church, or Wooded Hills Bible I would question your faith. Continue reading

Jason Webb Who Resigned From Elmbrook in Scandal in 2018 is Back in Ministry at Great Lakes Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin

Evangelicalism is often the story of scandal. Pastor resigns in scandal or disgrace and flees and then pops up in another location. Are we seeing that again with Jason Webb? This blog wrote about Jason Webb when he resigned from Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin in scandal. After two years Jason Webb is back working in a church in Kenosha, Wisconsin. A school district in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin decides to re-open but mandates face masks. In a contentious public hearing a white evangelical stands up and proclaims how face masks and social distancing are from Satan. For white evangelicals are face masks going to be the next Satanic panic? Reflecting on Michelle Van Loon’s Thoughts About Friendship and the Evangelical Church

Michelle Van Loon wrote an article the other day that looked at issues with friendship inside evangelicalism. Its about how she realized some people are not friends after all. This is a reflection on her article as I consider my past challenges of friendship inside evangelicalism. While I have two positive examples I was also deeply burned as well. I also explain under what circumstances will I push back from a person. Issues like anti-Semitic behavior and disparaging racial comments will lead me to end friendships as well.  Continue reading

Recalling My Formative Years Inside Evangelicalism in Wisconsin. Plus Deeply Embarrassing and Troubling Newspaper Articles About Dairy State Evangelical Christians Worshiping Donald Trump Over Jesus

Recently Evangelical Christians in Wisconsin have received some troubling press in the Boston Globe and the London Guardian. The publicity which is embarrassing discusses how white evangelicals in Wisconsin are worshiping Donald Trump over Jesus. I once called Wisconsin home and today stand horrified by what has developed. In addition the behavior of white evangelicals that I once knew from people like Steve Papez of Milwaukee Metro Crusade or Russell Schmaltz from Elmbrook further highlight these issues or of how some evangelicals are turning a blind eye. As I continue to push back from this stream of evangelicalism I have to grapple as to how the formative years of my life – my 20’s- were wasted in planting a Crusade chapter at Marquette University as well as being involved in churches like Wooded Hills and others. This blog entry is in part a post-mortem as to why I am pushing back from evangelicalism. Continue reading

Elmbrook Makes The Washington Post and Deep Disappointment in My Former Church as My Journey Away From Evangelicalism Continues

Elmbrook Church in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield made The Washington Post this past week. After the Christianity Today editorial calling for Donald Trump to resign the Post went to Elmbrook Church to ask attenders what they thought of the editorial. The responses were varied but they highlighted the issues today with Evangelical Christianity. In the fact that people don’t come forward and criticize Trump’s mocking the disabled or the boasting of sexual assault, well it is another illustration of why religion can be corrupt. After all if those who claim to follow Jesus, and be a new creation or born again can’t communicate the basics of their faith then why do places like Elmbrook exist?
