Why Sexual Abuse Needs to be on the Agenda of EFCA One in Chicago

On June 18, 2019 the Evangelical Free Church of America is meeting in Chicago, Illinois for their biennial conference known as EFCA One.  At this event, its this blog’s hope that the EFCA will discuss sexual assault and abuse. That it will be spurred to from events in the Southern Baptist Convention to what is playing out in society. There are warnings about sexual abuse inside the EFCA, and this blog has been approached about problems. This post explains how I view the topic and how plan to cover it. Continue reading

As Problems Increase at Blairstown Free Church Former Members Turn to the Eastern District of the EFCA for Assistance. In 2018 the Church Enters into a Decline While a Disturbing February 4, 2019 Congregational Meeting Occurred

After a significant number of members were thrown out of Evangelical Free Church of Blairstown many turned to the EFCA and Eastern District’s Eddie Cole for assistance. The EFCA District Superintendent believed Todd Nathan’s side of the story and allegedly violated their confidentiality by turning over their paperwork to the Blairstown Senior Pastor. However, the EFCA District Superintendent stated that he never agreed to confidentiality with the former members of Blairstown. Over the year of 2018 the church started to flounder as over 150 people left. 2019 began with the elder board practicing elder rule and ceasing to practice congregationalism. Continue reading

The Autocratic Reign of Todd Nathan and the Troubling Story of the Evangelical Free Church of Blairstown, New Jersey

Todd Nathan became the Senior Pastor of the Evangelical Free Church of Blairstown in 2014. Situated in Northwest New Jersey this is a good size Evangelical Free church that served the Blairstown Township for decades. Problems began to develop in the course of time and Todd could not deal with people challenging or asking questions. Many members slowly came to see the new leader of Blairstown as autocratic. A church that was once loving and kind was starting to deal with deep issues. In November of 2017 a credentialed EFCA pastor used a loophole in the church by-laws to allegedly target at least 22  members and throw them out of the congregation. Continue reading

Guest Post: A Person’s Experience in Two Evangelical Free Churches in the La Crosse, Wisconsin Area

This is a guest post about someone’s experiences in two separate Evangelical Free churches in the La Crosse, Wisconsin area. In this post you will see two churches through a younger person’s perspective. From dealing with authoritarianism, favoritism, to observing how her Mom was treated and much more. This made an impact on her and not in a positive way. She hopes that in telling this that a discussion can be started about church culture and corruption because in the end this person cares enough to share what transpired

The Wondering Eagle Book Review: Amanda Farmer’s “Once An Insider, Now Without a Church Home”

A recently published book looks at the growing problem of Neo-Calvinist theology inside the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA). Its the story of “Truth Evangelical Free Church” outside Minneapolis, Minnesota. This is a story of how a church goes from elder led to elder rule. Along the way you see how a traditional EFCA church was theologically flipped. In this heartbreaking story you will learn about how it became authoritarian. In the process the Neo-Calvinists are violating the “Significance of Silence” which is core to the EFCA.  This is a solid book that this blog heartily recommends. A Look at Rockpoint Church’s Political Comments on their Church Blog. A Gentle Reminder to the EFCA that they Need to Follow the Johnson Amendment

Senior Pastor Roy Fruits wrote a polarizing blog post that flirted with politics in the pulpit after the 2016 election. This is a look at what the pastor from the EFCA’s Rockpoint Church in Lake Elmo, Minnesota said. This post is a gentle reminder in the current election season that the Johnson Amendment prohibits politics being done from the pulpit. If this blog finds examples of EFCA churches that violate the Johnson Amendment I will report them to some of the atheist organizations I have interacted with.  Continue reading

EFCA’s Church Multiplication Sunday Occurs on October 7, 2018

On October 7, 2018 the EFCA is having Church Multiplication Sunday. Its a push through prayer for more church plants across the EFCA. In this post you can see the prayer requests for the EFCA districts across the United States. I also urge the denomination to proceed with caution as there are a number of internal issues inside the EFCA that need mitigation. From pastoral credentialing gaps to managing the Neo-Calvinist issue. If the EFCA doesn’t manage and deal with these issues then this will create additional problems for the EFCA.  Continue reading
