In Order to Understand Evangelical Culture One Should Cease Reading their Bible and Read George Orwell Instead

In order to understand evangelical Christian culture one should read, study and pay attention to the themes from George Orwell in his classic novels. The themes of corruption, totalitarianism, censorship, blind loyalty, and more are used to paint warning to society. Because remember comrade, while all animals are equal some like your pastor are more equal than others.  Continue reading

John Piper on When God Loves You Enough to Take Your Life. According to John is a Brain Tumor a Sign of God Disciplining Someone?

John Piper, the well known Neo-Calvinist theologian did an interview in which he spoke about how God can discipline someone with death. God after all gives people weakness, illness and even death. This theology once again shows how Neo-Calvinism makes the problem of evil, or pain and suffering worse.  Continue reading

The Harvest Bible Chapel Scandal Reveals the Toxic Issues with Hyper-Masculinity in Evangelicalism

A post that looks at how the toxic masculine culture at Harvest Bible Chapel has failed. In a belief system where “Act Like Men” was paramount many men chose to stay silent and were not counter-cultural or pushed back against abuse for nearly two decades. Instead you also had females and those outside the system who were pushing back and speaking out. This post looks at how the “Act Like Men” culture at Harvest Bible Chapel ultimately failed. Ryan Chase from Emmaus Road Church in Sioux Falls on The Biblical Way to Grieve

An elder from a Sovereign Grace Church in Sioux Fallas, South Dakota writes a post at Desiring God on how a Christian should grieve. I found this post from Ryan Chase at Emmaus Road Church to be toxic and troubling. To lecture someone in how to grieve in such a legalistic fashion is problematic. Life is not black and white and neither is the grief process. While Ryan has buried one son, I write this post as a child who recently buried two parents. Continue reading

Does Evangelical Culture Contribute to Pornography? Plus the Torment Accountability has Left in My Life

Does evangelical Christian culture drive people to embrace pornography? Plus looking at the harm that accountability relationships do to people. In my life accountability led to three painful situations. It destroyed one friendship from Campus Crusade in Wisconsin. Helping someone from Sovereign Grace’s Redeemer Arlington with accountability as an agnostic backfired as I faced a false accusation from someone who was frightened about adult pornography. And at Fairfax Community Church I learned how unhealthy churches can potentially use confessed material against people. And this happens while celebrity pastors like Mark Driscoll or C.J. Mahaney are not held accountable. Today’s post at The Wondering Eagle is about a warped aspect in evangelical culture.  Continue reading

Marshall Segal From Desiring God: Is My Reformed Theology Sick? Some Thoughts from a Non Neo-Calvinist

Marshall Segal from Desiring God not long ago wrote a post about asking if your reformed theology is sick. In a brief post he writes about how important it is to have good theology and to pray more. Then he ties it up with talking about learning to love. Thinking of his article in the context of Neo-Calvinist culture raises many thoughts which I explore in this post.  Continue reading
