Evangelical Christian Monica Brown Wages War Against School Libraries in Granbury, Texas Having Previously Cut Off Her Gay Son Who is Pushing Back Against His Mother’s Censorship. Meanwhile Monica Wants Her Evangelical Pastor to Determine What Books a Public School Library Can Have

Monica Brown is an evangelical mother who is waging the culture wars in Granbury, Texas. She is trying to purge school libraries of books she calls “pornographic.” In the process she has also allegedly filed a police report claiming that librarians are exposing children to pornography. Meanwhile her family is split as Monica and her husband have cut off their gay son Weston Brown. Weston who is upset about his mother’s behavior against libraries is challenging her and pushing back on Twitter. This blog post comes from an article I read in ProPublica.

“The fact is that censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion.”

Henry Steele Commager

My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments,
for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.

The evangelical culture wars against public schools continue

This blog read a story in ProPublica that it found exceptionally heartbreaking. Those of us who are refugees from evangelicalism understand how hard it is to live life apart the authoritarianism that is evangelicalism. Weston Brown grew up in an evangelical home. He was home-schooled by his evangelical mother. His home life was controlling. Science text books had pictures stapled together of men and women’s sexual reproductive organs. Harry Potter was Satanic and a threat to Weston’s faith, the same was true for Marvel comics. Other books and movies were warned about as they could open the door to sinful temptation. When Weston came out as gay his family cut him off. His mother texted him that he was not welcome to come home for Thanksgiving or interact with his siblings unless he stops being gay and repents. Monica and her husband want Weston to go into reparative therapy and become straight and overcome this temptation. Weston’s mother, Monica Brown has not just waged war against her son. As an evangelical Christian she is waging war against public school libraries and school baords.

An Evangelical Culture Warrior Wants to Purge Books From the Public School Library in Granbury, Texas and Have Her Evangelical Pastor Make the Final Say on What People Can Read

Monica Brown wants all “impure” books purged from the public school library. No references to being gay, transgenderism, sexual education, and similar topics. She has become a leader in the library wars and has even filed a criminal complaint on May 2, 2020 saying that the librarians were exposing minors to pornography. Granbury librarians became stuck in a criminal investigation that is ongoing. While the investigation drags on Monica Brown has filed multiple complaints about public school books. Monica’s goal is to have librarians arrested which she has allegedly called for. Plus she has stated that she wants her evangelical pastor to have the final say on school library books in a public school. You can listen to this clip below.

Weston Brown Pushes Back Against His Mother and Her Efforts to Ban Books on Social Media

Weston Brown, who is 28 and lives in San Diego, California watched his mother on social media with disbelief. The same one that had cut him off from the family was now trying to purge books from libraries that were “pornographic.” Weston researched what his mother claimed was “obscene” and as someone who is gay was horrified by her behavior. He started to push back and challenge his mother. Look at the following tweets below.

Some Closing Thoughts and This Blog Wishes Weston Brown Well

I felt sick. I felt anxious and upset. The fact that Monica Brown does not even use the public schools and yet she is trying to get books purged is deeply inappropriate. What is stuck with me is that if Monica Brown filed false charges, why hasn’t she been arrested and face legal problems for committing a crime? Making a false report to law enforcement is a serious deal. Why hasn’t she been read her Miranda rights and processed? I’ve written a couple of stories about evangelicals and the library wars at this blog already. Part of me wonders if the people like Monica Brown have mental health issues. I don’t understand the behavior. This blog supports and stands with Weston Brown. Weston, hang in there and stick with it. You are appreciated and loved Weston.

  1. Somehow I get the feeling that her campaign is linked to her son being gay. She wants to have something to blame. She desperately wants to believe that some evil in the world “turned her son gay”. If she can plunge herself into her campaign to fight her imaginary evil, and keep herself convinced that books are the cause, then she can stay in denial of the fact that he was born that way, and she should just accept him as he is. The whole thing is very sad, and horrible that she is dragging so many people with her into her personal fight against reality.

      1) GAWD H8S FAGS, you know. Just ask Fred Phelps and Ted Haggard.

      2) Does anyone remember BADD (Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons) during the Satanic Panic of the Eighties? A mother had her son commit suicide, blamed it all of SATANIC Dungeons & Dragons, and pretty much did everything this mother is doing. Even wrote a book about D&D and The Occult, “The Devil’s Web”. (From the title, it had to be a CHRISTIAN book.)

  2. My sister was a first grade teacher in the Florida schools, and resigned at the end of last year, increasingly frustrated by the combination of low pay and high expectations due to state regulations and micromanagement. This year, her district has informed teachers that they can have no classroom libraries due to concerns over government requiring that only “approved” books may be in schools. This is accompanied by a policy that any person, parent or otherwise, can bring a challenge against any book that they dislike in a classroom, with the potential for the teacher (and possibly administrators) losing their job and/or their license. So out of fear of the book-banning right-wing activist groups being encouraged and empowered by the state government, the district has simply said, no classroom libraries, and no books to be made available apart from limited selections from the school library. Naturally, no list of “approved” books exists, it’s just a case of “we’ll bring action against you if we don’t like something you use.”

My sister is fuming. She said that if she hadn’t resigned last year, she would have resigned this year when this policy went into effect. She spent years of her life amassing a classroom library of great children’s literature, designed to instill a love of reading in her students, with a wide variety of books that would appeal to the wide variety of interests her students might have.

For as much as the political right likes to advocate the right to free speech, and decries “safe spaces,” “snowflakes,” and “cancel culture,” they sure do like to do the very things for which they criticize the political left. And they sure do love themselves some book-banning.

  3. “…she wants her evangelical pastor to have the final say on school library books in a pubic school.” (I think you meant public school – maybe that’s her problem right there!)

Seriously, having taught at high school level (in Texas), I can say only a crazy person would want to become an educator today. Low pay, long hours, an administration that ratchets up more and more paperwork and seminar requirements that squeeze extra unpaid work – even weekends – from you. A few kids who excel, some who cheat to get by, a few who try to make your life hell. And then, the helicopter parents who call up to rant whenever poor Johnny gets a low test score. Its an immensely frustrating job at times. Now, teachers have to go through all their non-textbooks and make a list for somebody, somewhere, to give a thumbs up or down. AND AN EVANGELICAL PASTOR????? A teacher could be criminally charged for having unapproved books in her shelves. If I were teaching still, these Christian Karens would be the last straw. Teachers have only so much blood to draw from.

Remember the Seven Mountians Mandate of a CHRISTIAN Nation, where absolute power is held by groups of “Ten GODLY Men” at every level of government. And two of the Seven Mountains are CHRISTIAN control of ALL education and media/publication. NO Heathens, NO Heretics, NO Apostates.

  4. When you have a holy scripture where god explicitly states that gays must be put to death then this is the outcome.

Whenever I put the question out there, even the most tolerant of Christians will not renounce this edict.

There’s all sorts of mental gymnastics and so on and so forth but the majority of Christianity, particularly evangelical Christianity is on board.

So this comes as no surprise.

Should this bunch ever come to true power, your local mega church would have a guillotine set up in the parking lot with face painting, a bouncy castle and Jesus boyfriend songs.

This form of Christianity is a complete death cult.

Well, THIS Christian has no problem renouncing that stance. The issue I have seen with most believers understanding of the scripture is that they refuse to recognize that the scripture was written by men, not as scribes only writing down the words spoken by God, but simply as men who were writing about their understanding of God as influenced by the culture around them. Much of the scripture is culture based; this includes their views on women, gays, proper attire, how to do worship etc.

I do not subscribe to the “inerrant, infallible” viewpoint of the Bible held by fundamentalists. It is not a history book or a science book. It was not written by God with men acting only as scribes. It was written by men who were trying to explain their understanding of our world and how faith in God impacted their actions.

Christians should realize that to actually develop a deeper understanding of the scriptures they need to view them through the eyes of those who wrote them – the ancient Jews. Talk to any educated Jewish scholar and you will learn that they see most of the scripture as a symbolic narrative which contains a fair amount of myth, which they used to teach principles in an entertaining way. It was never intended to be read as a factual historical account.

I have long maintained that present-day Christianity needs an infusion of Judaism to “restore balance to The Force”.

  5. Given the lack of respect, the lack of resources (teachers buying classroom materials from their own pocket), the impossible working hours, the widely diverging expectations and the constant political and ideological harassment, it really is beyond me why *anyone* in their right mind would want to be a teacher in the U.S.
