The school year has started at Liberty University and its turning into a disaster. COVID-19 is exploding on campus and the mayor of Lynchburg, Virginia is concerned about the lack of public health and safety measures being taken. While at least 1,800 students are being asked to quarantine. freshman Landon Nesbitt started a petition that is demanding restrictions be ended pointing out that he and others paid money to have the Liberty experience and not be concerned about a virus.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
Ephesians 5:1 ESV
This is a post I meant to get up last night. There is especially disturbing news out of Liberty. According to multiple press sources COVID-19 has exploded at Liberty University. At the start of the school year Liberty, which doesn’t require COVID vaccination has a growing public health crisis that threatens not only Liberty, but also Lynchburg, Virginia as well.
A Growing COVID Medical Crisis and Concerns by Lynchburg’s Mayor
Liberty University is back in session for a new school year, and its already a disaster. Liberty took a few steps to deal with COVID though it was incredibly laxed. You can read about that in, “Liberty University is Dealing With a COVID-19 Outbreak and Has No Vaccination Strategy.” Liberty had a “mitigation period” from August 30 until September 10, 2021. As the “mitigation period” was ending on September 8, 2021 Liberty reported that COVID-19 infections had risen to 463 students and 1,800 were told to quarantine. Liberty restricted some indoor activities but allowed large gathering outside. Wearing a mask was encouraged but it was optional inside. Many Liberty students and parents expressed concern about what Liberty was doing. To date Liberty is the largest college in Virginia that does not require the COVID-19 vaccine. Virginia Tech, James Madison University, University of Virginia, etc.. all require COVID-19 vaccination.
“I find it alarming,” said MaryJane Tousignant-Dolan, the mayor of Lynchburg. “I just think it’s unconscionable that an institution as large as Liberty has not instituted some steps to keep not only their students safe and healthy, but the community in which they live.” With cases increasing and the hospital system stressed, she said, “It’s going to be scary times.” And despite the “mitigation period” some Liberty students were required to attend in person classes to the anger of some parents. Parents had emailed and pleaded with the university to re-consider its policies. With the local hospital overwhelmed there is deep worry that Liberty students could trigger COVID-19 infections at local evangelical churches in Lynchburg, Virginia. If you want to read more the following news articles discuss the growing COVID-19 outbreak at Liberty University.
- Washington Post, “Liberty University returns to in-person classes, with hundreds of new covid cases.”
- NBC 10, “Some say ‘too little too late’ to stop COVID-19 spread as Liberty University resumes in-person learning.“
- ABC 13, “Liberty University shifts focus on personal responsibility, not mandates, to stop COVID-19.“

Liberty Freshmen Landon Nesbitt Starts a Petition to End the Lockdown
While COVID-19 is exploding on Liberty’s campus a freshman started a petition demanding the all lockdown’s end and that campus returns to normal. In The Washington Post the other day Landon stated the following about the lockdowns. “I’m not a science denier,” he said. “I’ve seen the effects that covid has — it has affected people quite close to me.” But, he said, “I am a Christian,” and that means he is called on to live his life not ruled by fear. Landon’s petition has been signed by 1,300 students. This is what the petition says.
“We, Liberty students, feel that the university should deliver on its promises: In Person Learning. For many students the nature of freedoms that Liberty university encompasses (no masks required, in person lectures and teaching), is the very reason this university was chosen for higher education. This lockdown was unexpected and unwanted by the vast majority of the students here on campus. Therefore we the students request the ending of this lockdown.”
You can access the petition at Change.com.
There are a number of comments at the petition that Landon started that are quite revealing about the evangelical mindset at Liberty students, parents and alumni.
“Liberty promised no restrictions. I am paying tens of thousands of dollars to go to this college and I transferred schools to go to Liberty for many reasons, but a lot because of the promises of normality against lockdowns that they made. We are adults who should make our own decisions to stay home when we feel sick, not be forced to stay locked in our dorms, paying for online tuition. We have been through this long enough to know that a “temporary mitigation” is rarely temporary, and this is completely the opposite of what Liberty claimed to be their statement regarding covid for months. I am beyond disappointed.”
“quarantine doesn’t work, just let herd immunity take its natural course we are all adjusting to new people with new germs.”
“They are ruining our children’s college experience for an infection that has a 99.99914% survival rate. I don’t know who they are bowing down to but I think its the wrong “person”. I’m curious why there aren’t more signatures. Is it not getting traction or is there something odd with the numbers? I expected you to easily hit 1500 by now. I’ve shared as much as I can to those that have a vested interest. Good luck.”
“We do not need to fear this virus. All of my children have had this virus including my sophomore at Liberty. This lock down must end immediately including masks. As the leading Christian university we must be an example. Liberty must lead!”
“Liberty should give it’s students what they paid for. Theft is not becoming of a Christian school that claims to be Christian.”
“I pay tens of thousands of dollars to have access to all of the amazing things Liberty has to offer- not to be stuck in my room & not go to in person classes. If you do the math, each class is around ~$65-$75. It is ridiculous & uncalled for, for me to have to still pay that amount for online classes. We are adults, and the university treats us like adults in every aspect other than our own health. That makes no sense. Treat us like the adults that we are, keep your promises, and end this ridiculousness.”
“This is absolutely unnecessary & inappropriate – these students came to Liberty to get away from this kind of overreach and less than a week in you are pulling the rug out from under them. This virus is becoming endemic – let it run itself out – this is a YOUNG & HEALTHY population that deserve a normal experience – that they are paying a LOT of money and traveling across the country to try to get at Liberty. End this NOW.”
“LIBERTY University has lied to everyone of us they said that there was going to be NO restrictions and no mask mandates yet they want all the students to sit in their rooms for two weeks and take online classes. We didn’t pay for online classes we paid for in person learning and LIBERTY needs to hold their end of the deal up. Anyone that wants to mask up, quarantine, and have mandatory vaccinations can go literally to any public university in the United States. Christians are supposed to be set apart and not be like the rest of the world. Come on LU get back to training champions for Christ in person not on a screen!!!!”
“I find it absolutely outrageous that Liberty University advertised a normal college experience, with convocation, campus community, and many other large assemblies of people free of any COVID regulations, despite having plans to shut down in the even of a COVID outbreak. What did they think would happen?
Everyone that attends this school is an adult and as adults we should be allowed to make our own decisions. All of us, students, made the decision to attend a school that we were well aware had no COVID regulations. Liberty University needs to stand by their promise of no COVID regulations despite the recent outbreak that was obviously going to happen.
For the students who are worried about suffering from possibly contracting COVID, they can simply take their classes, which are already streamed online, online. The students who are willing to attend Liberty University in person despite the risks of a COVID regulation free environment should be allowed to do so.
The majority of students who signed on this Fall semester were well aware of the risks associated with a COVID regulation free environment, these students should be allowed to attend the university in the way they were promised.
Personally, I feel lied to and robbed. As a first-year student, I was very much looking forward to making new friends and having a normal college experience, which has now been stripped away from me.”
“This is crap! Nobody cares about the Chinavirus anymore. The vaccine has been available for months. Everyone who wants/needs the vaccine has had the opportunity to get it. This isn’t fair to kids to hurt their education like this.”
But out of all the comments my personal favorite is from someone claiming to be Giancarlo Granada saying, “Please let Becki know that I miss her.“
Analysis and Closing Thoughts
Liberty is a ticking time bomb for the community and public health of Lynchburg, Virginia. The fact that Liberty does not care about the people nearby reveals how toxic this place is as a school. The alternative bubble they live in is going to be a disaster for many people both on campus and off. Or are some people at Liberty just anxious to see Jesus? Even if it means a month long stay in an ICU intubated with a tube down your throat?
Likewise I look at those comments in the petition and I am stunned. My question to many at Liberty students, parents, and alumni angry about the brief COVID “restrictions” I have to ask the following. Were you as angry or outraged when Jerry Falwell Jr sat in the corner of a hotel room, with his dick in his hand, watching a pool boy mount his wife? Or is the real issue the fake “Chinavirus” as some of the commenters are saying.
I have a lot to say to Landon Nesbitt, but its almost two in the morning and I need to head to bed. Expect an open letter to Landon tomorrow about what he is saying about rights, responsibilities and how you treat your neighbor. Landon is a perfect example of why evangelical Christians are a joke and not to be taken seriously. This blog has always believed that the next Waco or Ruby Ridge will happen in Lynchburg, Virginia. But when I see pictures like the one above of Landon in the desert shooting his automatic rifle it begs the question. Is Liberty in the business of training terrorists and is individuals like Landon the future Proud Boys or Three Percenters?
