A Scientist Schools Wade Burleson on Vaccination, Masks and COVID-19 on Twitter. Meanwhile the Enid Pastor Continues Pushing Out Disinformation and Practices Obfuscation

The other day on Twitter a scientist saw Wade Burleson putting out disinformation about COVID-19, face masks, and vaccination. This person stepped up and challenged him on his disinformation. This is another post about the ongoing problem of American evangelicals practicing disinformation. In this particular case we see Wade Burleson represents the problems of evangelicalism.

“If you shut up truth, and bury it underground, it will but grow.

Emile Zola

“Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.”

Hebrews 11:1 NLT

The other day on Twitter a scientist schooled Wade Burleson on COVID-19, facemasks, vaccination and called out his disinformation campaigns. As the scientist wisely says, when someone puts out disinformation it becomes other people’s problems. Vaccination is necessary in order to get to herd immunity. In the view of this blog if evangelicals like Wade Burleson were around in the 1950’s screaming about vaccination we would never have eradicated polio. But there is another aspect to consider as well. Wade Burleson also said that misinformation is in the eye of the beholder. In other words there is no such thing as objective truth. So what does that mean? That truth does not exist? If information is in the eye of the beholder then in my view that opens the door to acts of evil. It paves the way to anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, violence, and a host of other disturbing issues.  And when evangelicals lack truth it also shows how they struggle with ethics as well. But the point of this post is to show how a scientist corrected Wade Burleson on science. This blog is big believer in science and always will be. And from my point of view it looks like Wade Burleson is still stuck in Dayton, Tennessee of 1925.

  1. People keep saying it’s Evangelicals, but, as I told Michael Cohen (who retweeted me! 😀 ), we also have Orthobros and the Catholic version. Recently, an Orthodox cleric in Toronto posted a scolding FB message about anti-science and arguments over communion spoons, and got a lot of hate in the comments.

I was born around the time of the first polio vaccine (Salk), and remember get vaccinated commercials on (B&W) TV: children playing, swimming, bouncing on a diving board — then freeze-framing with bulky leg braces appearing on their limbs. In grade school (probably first/second grade) I remember getting ushered with all the other kids into this big tent and trailers on school grounds for the Sabin (oral) polio vaccine.

And the polio stories of the past 50-60 years were everywhere. Every summer (polio season), all the playgrounds and public swimming pools locked down; parents keeping kids locked down at home; about how for 16 years the POTUS in a wheelchair, able to walk only with canes and leg braces; entire hospital wards filled with nothing but iron lungs hissing away 24/7, daily updates (via newspaper, radio, later TV) of the day-by-day polio case and death counts for THIS polio season.

EVERY SINGLE SUMMER of the Perpetual Polio Pandemic.

  5. Covid came at an interesting time in American history. There has been an unprecedented demographic shift.

For white evangelicals, democracy is awesome when you’re the majority. Not so much when other folks get a larger share of the pie.

The Salk vaccine came at a time when the white demographic was on top. Gays were firmly in the closet (or mental institutions if they had the courage to come out) and there were only two genders.

Christianity was pretty much the state religion. and for many, exotic food was the local Chinese restaurant – serving suitably fried Americanized Chinese food.

Burleson’s outlook comes from a demographic that is in decline and in denial. Now they hurl epithets from the palisades. “Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elder berries”
