An evangelical pastor recalled in an op-ed at the Religion News Service how he contributed to fear and hysteria from the pulpit. And how that was used to fundraise. Rev Rob Schenck explains how people like himself bear a lot of responsibility for the violence as evangelical culture helped create the violence.
“Leadership – leadership is about taking responsibility, not making excuses.“
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
Psalm 51:1-2 NIV
United States Capitol
A former evangelical pastor wrote an op-ed at the Religion News Service recently that addresses the January 6, 2021 violence at the United States Capitol. Rev Rob Schenck is today with the Methodist Church, and is the president of the The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute in Washington, D.C. His op-ed with the Religion News Service deals with how evangelical pastors fundraise off people’s fear and play on people’s emotions. He writes the piece with regret saying that people like him are responsible for the violence at the United States Capitol violence. This blog would encourage you to read the op-ed in, “How evangelicals’ fundraising by demonization fed Capitol violence.”
