#PastorParler A Look at the Politics of Tyler Ethridge, a Christian Nationalist Pastor Allegedly Involved in the January 6, 2021 Washington, D.C. Coup Attempt

This post is looking into the politics of a Christian nationalist pastor who was allegedly involved in January 6, 2021 Washington, D.C. coup attempt. This post looks at who influenced Tyler Ethridge politically with individuals such as Rush Limbaugh and Lin Wood. Ethridge also advocated for the Constitution to be suspended and martial law be imposed and the United States military be called out.  This post looks at the views of someone stuck in an echo chamber.

“The modern conservative is engaged in one of man’s oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.”

John Kenneth Galbraith

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.

Ernest Benn

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Ephesians 4:2 NIV

Our Christian nationalist pastor/alleged terrorist

This blog is doing a deep dive into Tyler Ethridge. Tyler is a Christian nationalist pastor who was allegedly involved in the Washington, D.C. riot who stormed the Capitol and recorded a video amidst tear gas. This blog has looked at many other aspects of Tyler to include his views on the prosperity gospel, COVID-19, conspiracy theorists like John Guandolo and pastors like Brian Gibson who influenced him. This is the last post before I get into two separate posts that look into Tyler’s behavior and actions leading up to the January 6, coup attempt. His behavior on January 6, 2021 and what he said after the event where he defended his actions. This is a religious blog but Christian nationalism is deeply intertwined with politics so this is the last post I had to do before getting into the actual riot itself. So I decided to make this the last one.

What Did Tyler Ethridge Believe Politically?

Tyler had a lot of extreme positions and many of them were not ground in reality. He lived in an echo chamber and feasted on misinformation daily. Below are some of the screen shots from his Facebook page and I will get into them and look at what he said.

Influenced by Rush Limbaugh and Lin Wood

Tyler Ethridge listened to and pushed Rush Limbaugh on his Facebook page. Rush Limbaugh well known radio host from Missouri who got his start in Sacramento, California in the 1980s. He’s dealing with terminal cancer. After the November 3, election Rush Limbaugh claimed that Biden did not win legitimately. Lin Wood is an attorney and conspiracy theorist based out of Atlanta, Georgia. He is known for his defense of Richard Jewell in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing. Lin Wood became a loud social media personality who trafficked in conspiracy theories. Wood falsely claimed that Trump won the 2020 election. He played a role in filing lawsuits in an attempt to stop the certification of legally cast ballots. For his abuse of legal efforts the city of Detroit moved to have both Wood and Sidney Powell be disbarred. Toward the end of 2020 Wood got notorious attention for some outrageous claims. He called for Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to be imprisoned. Woods claimed the both individuals from Georgia conspired with Chinese government to rig a presidential election against Trump. Wood also pushed Q Anon conspiracy theories and suggested that Vice-President Mike Pence would, “face execution by firing squad.” Currently Lin Wood is having his law license reviewed by the State Bar of Georgia and the certification board wants him to submit to a mental health evaluation, of which he is refusing.

Wanting to See Martial Law Declared in the United States

Tyler Ethridge also supported the United States Constitution being suspended and President Trump imposing martial law. We the People is a Northeast Ohio organization affiliated with the Tea Party called for the election to be suspended, martial law to be imposed and for the United States military to run an election. We the People also defends white supremacy as well. The advertisement appeared in the Washington, Times, a controversial newspaper which has been the mouthpiece of the Unification Church of South Korea and the late Reverend Sun Yung Moon. The call to have martial law be imposed was also pushed by disgraced former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. Military lawyers and leaders were horrified at the suggestion and the issue was discussed in the Military Times. Ohio’s Attorney General also called the request to impose martial law “utterly irresponsible.”

Some of Tyler Ethridge’s Personal Views on Politics

The screenshot from his Facebook page below will give you a taste of what Ethridge believes. In it you will see comments against health restrictions during a pandemic. He’s also consumed by issues of taxation, government, and he mixes it all together in the end. Pay close attention to the last line in this screenshot. Ethridge is opposed to having pastors being divorced from office. He wants pastors to run for political office and wear dual hats. Preach on Sunday and then serve in the city council, legislature or Congress simultaneously. This is some really warped stuff.

Closing Thoughts

This post is not meant to gang up or rebuke conservatism. I voted as a traditional conservative for years and did so in the 2016 primary. But the abundance of conspiracy theories and the warped train of thought from Ethridge is something else. David Barton has also played a role in this as well as he is linked to Charis Bible College. But the screenshots you see today will be even worse after the January 6, 2021 attempted coup. In those you will see a Christian nationalist pastor take a Bible and try and use it to argue against communism or socialism. However, while I would suggest that Tyler Ethridge argues against both communism or socialism, I very much doubt he knows what both of those systems are. And while I am opposed to both communism and socialism, the fact that he tries to use a Bible to argue against them is pretty warped. The Bible doesn’t address communism. Its not mentioned or spoken to in either the New or Old Testaments. Having gone through many of Tyler’s beliefs in a series of posts this blog will focus next on his alleged behavior before the January 6, 2021 coup attempt and his alleged behavior that day and afterward.

  1. Ethridge is just another rabble rouser, they’re a-dime-o’-dozen.
We’ve had them before, and I’m optimistic that he’ll fade away in due course just like the ones before him.
Even if he and his followers do manage to scrounge together a few AR-15s and start a shooting ruckus somewhere in our Nation, it will go nowhere, and it will wind up just like Shay’s rebellion, or the Whiskey rebellion; put down and crushed utterly.
