Christian Nationalism and the D.C. Coup Attempt and the Way Forward at The Wondering Eagle

This blog had a goal and then the events on January 6, 2021 upended my writing plan. Issues such as Christian nationalism, culture wars, evangelicals and misinformation and conspiracy theories are very hot right now. So for the time being I am going to write about those topics as they are front and center. This is communicating the goals this blog has during this unique time in history.

“That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.”

Aldous Huxley

that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:19-20 NIV

This blog is dazed and can’t believe all that has happened in the last week. On the morning of January 6, 2021 this blog launched a post about a personality in the Evangelical Free Church of America, in the EFCA West office. You can read that post in, “Recalling an Experience With EFCA West’s Bob Osborne and Why the EFCA Will Fail to Reach People Outside Their Culture.” After that post I planned to launch several more posts about the EFCA, and work through an Acts 29 story. There is still the COVID-19 pandemic that is ongoing. That was the plan at this blog. I looked at what I had laid out and looked forward to tackling many topics.

Several hours later everything was upended when a mob was incited by Donald Trump at attack the Capitol. Starting that day there was discussion about the event at The Gospel Coalition, evangelical websites and the major press outlets. Suddenly Christian nationalism became a very hot topic and the issues that choke evangelicalism such as conspiracy theories, the culture wars, and other issues such as the flawed belief of persecution are now being discussed. Its in the New York Times, NPR, Los Angeles Times, and other media outlets. Its all over Twitter and social media in ways I have not seen previously. This blog has a goal and issues to write about. However, I am also trained in history to know that one has to be aware of the issues at hand. I have written about some of these issues regarding Christian nationalism because I have seen how it effected ministries and churches I once called home. This blog due to the issues going on here in D.C. has written about some of these issues these past few days and for the time being is going to spend time addressing these issues in evangelicalism. Its a unique time in history and it would not seem right to go on and write about the EFCA, Acts 29 or other topics with these evangelical topics being front and center. I don’t want to be tone deaf as a writer. So for the immediate future this blog is going to write about Christian nationalism, evangelicals and disinformation, culture wars and the problem of conspiracy theories. To ignore those issues right now would not be right. And hopefully when things return to normal this blog will plow ahead on regular topics. If possible I may start to squeeze in a couple of posts in between the other posts. But I want to communicate this to those who read this blog so you’ll know what is coming down the pike.
