After an attempted coup that Donald Trump inspired against the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 a prominent Southern Baptist has called on the embattled American President to resign. Russell Moore made the call for the president to leave this morning on Twitter. It will be interesting to see how the Christian nationalists of the Southern Baptist wing will respond.
“You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.”
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Matthew 5:9 NIV
In a very bold and strong development in the morning of January 8, 2021 Russell Moore who leads the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) called on President Trump to resign.
Russell Moore has been very active on Twitter this week. Much more than usual. He has appealed for peace and called on President Trump to get his followers to stop the attack on the United States Capitol. Russell Moore has been known for his Neo-Calvinist views and many Christian nationalists in the Southern Baptists who are dedicated to Donald Trump have gone after him in the past. Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist in the Dallas, Texas metropolitan area called for Moore to be removed form the head of the ERLC in early 2020. This blog wrote about that issue last year. For more information you can go to, “The Southern Baptist Executive Committee Plans to Investigate Russell Moore for his Past Critical Comments of Then Candidate Donald Trump. Court Evangelical Jack Graham is Allegedly Leading this McCarthyist Action.”
This call by Russell Moore has received the attention of the New York Times this morning and you can read about that in, “A prominent Southern Baptist calls on Trump to step down.” As of this blog post this news is still fresh and other religious news sources have not reported on this development. When they do this blog plans to add those sources to this post.
Will Jack Graham and the Christian Nationalists Try and Remove Russell Moore Now?
Here is an intriguing question that needs to be asked. The Christian nationalist wing of the Southern Baptists have long resented and had issues with Russell Moore. They have tried to have him removed and spoken out against him. With a loosely formed coup attempt that Trump inspired, and 5 people dead and around 60 injured is Jack Graham and others going to move against Moore during this national crisis? If that happens nothing could show how sick and demented the Southern Baptists are in this dark time in American history. If that were to happen it would show that in both the Civil War and this attempted coup that the Southern Baptists are ethically and morally bankrupt, not about peace and very much lost. During this crisis this blog plans to monitor how the Christian nationalist wing of the Southern Baptists will respond.
