The Trinity Church in Scottsdale, Arizona announced that Senator Martha McSally will be at the 11:00 service. This post looks at this situation and is surprised because Mark Driscoll has long been averse to politics. Why would a Senator in a difficult re-election race chose to share the platform with Mark Driscoll?
“There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.”
Test me, Lord, and try me,
examine my heart and my mind;
3 for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love
and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.
Psalms 26:2-3 NIV
Yesterday The Trinity Church in Scottsdale, Arizona announced that Arizona Senator Martha McSally was joining the congregation. Mark Driscoll and his wife Grace are going to interview McSally. The Senator is going to talk about her Christian faith and then give her testimony. This is happening at the 11:00 a.m. service and is taking place before Mark Driscoll preaches about Romans 3. For those of you who do not know the Arizona Senate race is one of the most followed races in the country. Martha McSally is behind and Cindy McCain, the wife of the late John McCain endorsed Joe Biden. I don’t think she has commented on this Senate race.
Politics at Mars Hill Seattle
When I interacted with a number of people from Mars Hill one individual said something that stuck with me. We were discussing the Neo-Calvinist movement. and he emphasized that politics really did not come up. It was not the culture and Driscoll had emphasized the message of preaching the gospel and of a crucified savior. Neo-Calvinists are not really as much about the culture wars or political influence. Mark Driscoll in a sermon at Mars Hill once claimed, “If you’re a believer, this is as close to Hell as you’ll ever be. If you’re not a believer, this is as close to Heaven as you’ll ever get.” That alone explains what evangelicals priorities should be. According to that take the focus on issues of eternal significance helps put political issues and elections in perspective.
Analysis and Closing Thoughts
When I saw this email from The Trinity Church I was stunned. Granted I know that Driscoll was re-launched by Robert Morris in Texas, and he has a charismatic influence to him now. And that this strand of evangelicalism is more political. Yet Driscoll had a long history of being averse to politics. If I am wrong then I invite correction. But this could also mean that Driscoll is desperate to have such audience. Then on the flip side it also means that Martha McSally must be desperate to win re-election in Arizona. When you are seeking out audiences with people like Driscoll you are indeed scrapping the bottom of the barrel. There are so many other churches that I think Martha McSally would have chosen. But the Trinity Church? Wow..I am speechless. On a humorous side I would love to see Mark Driscoll giving his sermon about Esther being a slut or the Biblical basis of blow jobs. If that were to happen The Lincoln Project would certainly have fun with that in an advertisement about McSally. Feel free to add your thoughts to this perhaps you have an angle that I am missing to this picture.
