An Alleged Rape is Shared on Facebook and How Liberty University Badly Mishandled a Sex Crime

This afternoon an incredibly dark story about Liberty University came out on Facebook. Lizzie Hosanna shared her story of an alleged rape and how Liberty University badly mishandled the crime. This blog asked for and received permission before republishing this story. This is a dark post at The Wondering Eagle, but this blog stands in Lizzie’s corner and believes her.

“I’m afraid the story isn’t finished happening. Sometimes I think there is no entirely true story I could tell. Because there are some things I just don’t know, and other things I just can’t say. Which is not a failure of memory but of language.

Lacy M Johnson

“Since then I’ve always thought that under rape in the dictionary it should tell the truth. It is not just forcible intercourse; rape means to inhabit and destroy everything.

Alice Sebold

Jerry Falwell Jr.

There is a horrific story on Facebook about a Liberty student and her alleged rape and how it was handled by Liberty University in 2017. Its is gruesome and disturbing and raises deep questions about the ability of Liberty University to handle sexual crimes. Before re-publishing Lizzie Hosanna’s story I contacted her and asked for permission to republish it. She responded with warmth and thanked me for asking for permission and allowed me to republish it. The story also recounts a suicide attempt. My fear is that these kinds of stories are far more prevalent at Liberty University then people want to admit. If you don’t want to read something shocking and graphic I would stop now. Hopefully Lizzie will find justice one day. This is an incredibly brave female for coming forward and sharing this dark story. This blog wishes her well and stands in her corner. Above all else this blog believes her.

  1. Horrific.

Going to the police first was the right thing to do.

If I were the boyfriend, it would be a soul searching moment. I would feel like my duty, my social responsibility, would be to carry out acts of violence against the person who raped my girlfriend. But that’s not what Christ would do.

Unfortunately this story is all too common. I wonder if campus anti-drinking measures would be more successful if they used anonymized stories like this to shock students into paying attention. It’s not victim blaming to say that if you get blackout drunk without someone there to protect you, you are at high risk of being taken advantage of. It doesn’t happen to every person who gets blackout drunk, but every weekend it happens to someone who gets blackout drunk. Getting blackout drunk alone at a college party is Russian Roulette.
