When Church is Dangerous to Your Health: Kevin Byrum’s Uplink in Menominee Falls, Wisconsin Discourages Face Masks During a Pandemic

Uplink was a break off of Wooded Hills Bible Church and planted in Menominee Falls, Wisconsin by Kevin Byrum. Kevin preaches at Uplink. In a recent social media posting Kevin stressed that face masks are not required and thus discourages them from being used. What do you do when church is hazardous to your health?  Or when it poses a threat to the community is serves? That is the subject of this post at The Wondering Eagle.

“Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.”

Alexander Pope

The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[a] There is no commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:31 NIV

Kevin Byrum and Uplink discouraging face masks in a pandemic

A week ago today I received a text message from a friend whose family is in the Chicago area. His Mom was starting to experience labored breathing and feeling weak. She was afraid she caught COVID-19. She went to get tested and my friend nervously awaited the results. A couple of days later when it came to COVID-19 I got another text from my friend who said the following

My Moms test came back positive.

Currently she is in the hospital as she developed breathing issues and her oxygen level is low. She was taken there by paramedics.  As of this writing this is about the 10th or 11th person I know who has been impacted by COVID-19. I have known people all across the spectrum to those who are asymptomatic to those who had a serious brush to those who experienced a medical crisis with it. I have also known several families who lost people to COVID-19. A close friend in Kansas last his grandfather to COVID. One of this blogs sources approached me and shared how two separate parents of two friends died in the ICU in Northern New Jersey of COVID-19 on the same day. Their bodies succumbed while being attached to a ventilator that was helping them breath. She was in a state of shock. So as COVID continues to impact my life I saw something the other day that is deeply irresponsible and disappointing.

Kevin Byrum and Uplink in Menominee Falls, Wisconsin

When I lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin I was a member of Wooded Hills Bible Church. Kevin Byrum led the worship. It was quite a sight to see. A guy in his late 40’s jumping up and down on stage like he was in a high school band contest is the best way to describe it. Reflecting back on it now Kevin leading worship can also an advertisement for adderall. I separated from Wooded Hills Bible in 2005 and moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Shortly after I left Kevin Byrum and some others from Wooded Hills left to form a smaller house church in Menominee Falls, Wisconsin called Uplink. Kevin Bryum preaches there and this church appears to be a part of dominion theology with the seven hills of controlSo over the past decade or so I have heard about Uplink from time to time. This is a place into prophecy and dreams, spiritual warfare and individuals like Recie Saunders. You can check out Uplink’s theology here. Uplink also advertises itself as a place for those who have endured spiritual abuse and more. And yet while Uplink claims to be a healthy place spiritually something I saw the other day illustrates why Uplink can be physically dangerous to attend.

The Irresponsible Behavior of Kevin Byrum and Uplink on Face Masks and a Lesson From the Plague of Europe

On social media Kevin Byrum is notifying people that Uplink is open for business. In the process he is also stressing that you don’t have to RSVP so there is no concern about controlling the amount of people in the room. In addition Kevin Byrum is also pushing that face masks are not required while claiming the first amendment still reigns. I see stuff like this and thank God I am done with evangelicalism. The craziness of it all is beyond disappointing. The rejection of science and the risk that exists is downright dangerous. What do you do when church is dangerous and harmful to your health? What do you do when church doesn’t care about immune-compromised people who have had chemotherapy or other cancer treatments? What do you do when a “church” is acting irresponsibly to the point they can leave someone injured or even dead? What if in a month or two after attending Kevin Byrum’s Uplink and picking up COVID-19 they entered the hospital and died? This blog has written about how evangelical churches are spreading COVID-19. You can read more in the following posts.

When it comes to evangelical churches and irresponsibility now this blog can add Kevin Byrum’s Uplink to the list. What is exceptionally sad is that during the plague in Europe Christians followed health guidelines and supported people out love. People didn’t stress individual freedom they served their community. That was how Christianity grew in Europe. Meanwhile during a pandemic in the United States that has claimed 172,000 lives and is projected to reach about 300,000 by the end of the year; you have people like Kevin Bryim stressing the first amendment. That goes along very well with what Jesus said about loving your neighbor and caring for your community. Oh who am I kidding? Uplink loves their neighbor? Should someone sit down and share the Gospel with Kevin Byrum?

This blog is disappointed to see the message that I did on social media. Earlier on I wrote about how the COVID-19 pandemic is going to bring out the problems in evangelicalism in, “How the COVID-19 Pandemic is Going to Reveal the Dark Flaws and Systemic Issues of Evangelical Christianity.”  Once again Uplink in Menominee Falls confirms that post written earlier this year. This blog wants to write any follow up stories to any COVID-19 outbreaks in the Menominee Falls area if they are traced to Kevin Byrum’s Uplink. The sheer irresponsibility of Uplink in threatening people’s lives and putting people them in risk is disturbing and troubling. What type of shepherd puts people in harm’s way?  As I have exited evangelicalism for me posts like this highlight what a fool I was to have been involved in Wooded Hills Bible Church and once admire and respect the people who were in leadership at one point. In the end I was the fool. And that is something I will have to live with in my life. If people learn of any COVID-19 outbreaks at Uplink please email me at wonderingeagle261@gmail.com. Let’s flush this out and warn the community of the problems at Uplink and work to protect individuals from being harmed.

  1. “Uplink”?
That’s the name of the church?
    Really?
Given that, I am not surprised by anything that comes out of it.

I thought the fad of KEWL unchurchy church names was on its way out.
If “Uplink” doesn’t say “More KEWL Than Thou”, I don’t know what does.

    • If there’s no way to tell the difference between the name of your church and a bar in Sodosopa, maybe consider renaming your church.

Unless it’s one of these new church-bars (or church-coffee-shops), which from all accounts are fantastic ministry opportunities, but are hard to scale up.

  3. FYI, “Menomonee Falls” is the spelling of the Milwaukee suburb where Plague Rat Byrum is located.
Menominee is the native American tribe (and town in west-central Wisconsin.)
