John Gehring at The National Catholic Reporter Writes About Attorney General Bill Barr and the Culture Wars

William Barr is the highest Catholic in the Trump Administration. The United States Attorney General considers himself a culture warrior and is admired by traditional Catholics and evangelicals alike. In the National Catholic Reporter an in depth look at Barr and his faith and the culture wars was written by John Gehring. This is a brief post about the culture wars from a more traditional Catholic perspective.

“How can it be that the homosexual movement, at one or two percent of the population, gets treated with such solicitude while the Catholic population, which is over a quarter of the country, is given the back of the hand?

William Barr

In the morning, when he returned to the city, he was hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the side of the road, he went to it and found nothing at all on it but leaves. Then he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once. 20 When the disciples saw it, they were amazed, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” 21 Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done. 22 Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.

This blog reads a lot of materials and subscribes to a lot of publications. Some of this is how I get idea for posts. One of the publications I get is the National Catholic Reporter. This morning they had an article from John Gehring that I found quite interesting. Gehring is the Catholic Program Director for Faith and Public Life. Gehring published an article at the National Catholic Reporter about Attorney General William Barr. Barr is the highest Catholic in the Trump Administration. Incidentally this was published on the same day that a call was made for the D.C. BAR to investigate the attorney general for violating BAR rules. This article by Gehring looks at William Barr’s Catholic faith and his waging of the Catholic culture wars. Barr’s efforts at fighting the culture wars has endured him to many evangelicals as well. This article looks at Barr and his view of religious freedom, capital punishment, gay issues, and much more. The name of the article is called, “William Barr, nation’s top lawyer, is a culture warrior Catholic.”

    • I listened to that Notre Dame speech as I was writing and was stunned by how far he believes the government should intervene when it comes to religion. I can see why evangelicals and traditionalist Catholics like him.
