In Addition to the Bible Ray Ortlund Should Give a Christian a Copy of George Orwell’s 1984 to Help Them Understand Evangelicalism

Ray Ortlund explained why he would give a copy of the Quaran to Christians to read. What Ray Ortlund should do is give a copy of George Orwell’s 1984. That classic dystopian novel will help Christians understand evangelicalism as well.

“Orthodoxy means not thinking — not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.”

George Orwell

“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”

George Orwell

“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”

George Orwell

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

Romans12:12 NIV

Before the COVID-19 pandemic took off there was a video at The Gospel Coalition that grabbed my attention. I have been meaning to write about it but I am behind and have much to dig through! As always too many topics and not enough time. Ray Ortlund is a pastor at Immanuel Church in Nashville, Tennessee. His educational background is as follows, earned a B.A. from Wheaton, M.A from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He also taught for a while at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and over his storied career pastored churches in Oregon, California, Georgia and now Tennessee. He has published a number of books as well. Ray should also be remembered for his role in the Sovereign Grace Ministry scandal and his enabling of C.J. Mahaney. Outland senior blocked me early on Twitter and his son threatened to block me a couple of years ago. So all one can say is so much for reaching the lost….

The Video Ray Ortlund Published at The Gospel Coalition

The Gospel Coalition publishes a series called One Minute Apologetics. People who have contributed include Russell Moore, Ligion Duncan, Julius Kim, Sam Alberry and David Platt just to name a few. On March 5, 2020 Ray Ortlund did, “What Book, Other than the Bible, Would You Give to a Christian?”  Ray said that he would encourage Christians to read the Quaran. He asked people to read the Quaran with the following questions in mind. According to the Quaran whom does God love? Whom does God favor? How does one qualify for the favor, and blessing, and grace of God?

Ray Ortlund Should Ask Evangelicals to Read George Orwell’s 1984

In order to understand evangelicalism there is one book that should be a priority. Its a book that Christians should read and process and read along with their Bible and church. That book is George Orwell’s 1984. Why do I say that? Because of the messages that 1984 captures and conveys the culture of Evangelical Christianity. It explains the issues like authoritarianism, power, control, propaganda and  manipulation, Loyalty is a theme of Orwell’s classic and evangelicalism is about loyalty to the brand of the mega church pastor or pastor. Then you also have a new language which is called Newspeak that is a new language. In the process it removes words and redefines them as well. Lastly I would also add that just like 1984 evangelicalism depersonalizes sex and makes people submit to the church. In the end its about control. Last fall I wrote a post that explored this topic. Its just that when I saw what Ray Outland was doing George Orwell came to my mind. You can read my previous post in far greater detail in, “In Order to Understand Evangelical Culture One Should Cease Reading their Bible and Read George Orwell Instead.”

  1. And when you give them that novel-length political cartoon, tell them “If when you read this, you start to see parallels between the atmosphere of this book and that of your church, RUN!
