George W Bush released a statement on May 3, 2020 and addressed the COVID-19 pandemic. In this moving message he challenged people to come together and to not be partisan. Its a refreshing reminder of leadership.
“Leadership to me means duty, honor, country. It means character, and it means listening from time to time.”
George W Bush
On May 3, 2020 President George W Bush put out a statement on the COVID-19 pandemic. The statement reminded me of what I liked about W. I voted for him twice and liked him in many ways. He was not without error, the biggest in my view was the Iraq War. But aside from that Bush rose to the occasion on many situations. He responded with empathy, kindness and leadership after September 11, 2001. When the 2008 financial crisis hit his administration worked at addressing it. He also brought both candidates Obama and McCain to the White House and kept them in the loop about the challenges. This message is an example of leadership. It reminds me of what is lacking today.
Give this message a listen. Notice how he plays to the better angels of people’s nature. Note how he is calling on people to come together and look out for the unemployed, elderly and the ill. In the message he states that it is not a time for partisan fighting. I have a story I want to tell you guys. When I was in college I attended the 1996 Republican National Convention. I was on the convention floor in San Diego and ABC’s Sam Donaldson came rushing by plowing down an aisle. I was knocked to the side and I bumped into someone who had their back to me. This was right next to the Texas sign. I apologized to the person and he turned around and it was Texas Governor George W Bush. He slapped me on the back and in a Texas drawl said, “No problem son….” He signed my Dole/Kemp sign. In the bottom of my closet in my bedroom I have a Dole/Kemp sign that is filled with signatures from a number of Republican personalities. Its one of the items I most treasure.
Bush’s statement is an example of leadership. This is the Republican Party I identified with. To hear his message is refreshing. My hope is that this resonates people to think about the current mess in power. But make sure you give this message a listen. Its well worth your time.
