Michael W. Smith on the COVID-19 Pandemic

Michael W. Smith released a message through YouTube about the COVID-19 pandemic. He challenged the church to rise to the occasion and get out of their comfort zone. This blog has to tell the Christian musician something. First the evangelical church will fail like it usually does. And second “comfort zone” puts a lot of people in knots. But on a positive this blog is grateful that Smitty encouraged social distancing.

“Directions are instructions given to explain how. Direction is a vision offered to explain why.”

Simon Sinek

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin

In Mid-March Michael W. Smith released a video in which he spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic. The Christian musician said a few things that I wanted to write about. So I dropped this video into this post and want to respond to some of what Michael W. Smith says.

News for you Michael the Church Will Fail Once Again

Michael W. Smith challenged the evangelical church to rise to the occasion. Its time for the church to shine and to do well. I hate to the be the one who will pop Michael W. Smith’s bubble but the reality is that many evangelicals will not rise to the occasion. One thing that I find incredibly depressing and it can lead one to doubt God entirely; especially when you see how the church fails time and time again. Well the reality is that it will fail at a time that is needed. It begs the question from my point of view, if this is the vessel that God works through what the hell was God thinking?  In this situation like may evangelicals talk big and many times it falls through. My advice is when someone says they are an evangelical is to lower your standards. If you do that it will be healthier.

If I Hear Comfort Zone One More Time I Will Scream

In his talk Michael W. Smith spoke about Christians getting out of their “comfort zone.” When I heard that my stomach went into knots. “Comfort zone” is one of the most warped and twisted words in evangelicalism.  I can’t begin to tell you how often I heard that word in evangelicalism. Over and over it was hammered. It was the basis for warped accountability, giving money, doing mission trips, etc… It was so abused that when I hear it still my stomach goes into knots and I want to heave. So I wish Michael W. Smith and other evangelicals would just drop the word altogether.

Grateful that Michael W. Smith Encourages Social Distancing

Let’s end this short post on a positive note. I am grateful that in the message Michael W. Smith encourages people to stay home and follow laws and government direction. That alone is encouraging. He also encouraged people to practice social distancing. That is good and something all should be doing in society. That is what will help us flatten the curve and bring the COVID-19 virus under control. The worst thing that could happen is to not practice social distancing and let it come roaring back in a way in a deadly manner. So kudos to Michael W. Smith for stating that in his talk. This blog appreciates him helping in that manner. Well with that I will end this post with a Michael W. Smith song.

  1. Oh yeah, I remember “comfort zone.” Heck, it’s never gone away, despite me being away from Evangelicalism for 15 years now.

Dang, now I feel old (again) because I remember Smitty as being young and hot, and there he is all wrinkled now. 😛

I have the same reaction to the word “Scripture”, for much the same reason.
