During These Challenging Times Try and Support People and Businesses You Know

This is a brief post asking for people to support businesses and establishments in their communities or in the United States. Its a challenging time but for those who can will you join me in helping others who are challenged during this time?

“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”

Albert Einstein

Thomas Jefferson

If you have been following the news you know how challenging it can be. From the stock market to the stories dealing with the pandemic in the hospitals and watching the growing medical situation. Its stressful. About four weeks ago when the situation was deteriorating I was speaking to a cashier in a Mexican Taco Shop that I adore in the Washington, D.C. area. It reminds me of the Mexican places I grew up with in California and finding a place like that on the East Coast is rare. So I support,  spend money and patronize them. The cashier told me as to how much business was down and the challenges that exist. In speaking with her I ordered an extra meal and had lunch set for the following day. Knowing their need I wanted to help them to the best of my ability.

I am a strong supporter of many places and businesses. Yes I like museums and going to the gym. But there are also other places that I like to support. From hobby shops, laundromats, restaurants, couple of clothing stores and more. I am very much aware how this COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the communities we live in. Yes lives are being lost and that should remain first in our mind. But there are also simultaneously a lot of business and more at risk. This is a complex situation that is challenging. The other day I asked who are the heroes in this pandemic? You can read that in, “Who Are The Heros of the COVID-19 Pandemic?

 It Feels Overwhelming…

It feels overwhelming. Sometimes I want to ask myself what can someone like me do in this situation right now? What can a person like me do? Its easy to be filled with despair and freeze. Have you ever had that deer in the headlight look? Well, here are the ways that I am trying to help my neighborhoods and cities around the United States. I am trying to help businesses that I support and giving them an extra purchase to help keep them afloat. I have become very familiar with Door Dash and Grubhub. When I heard that Cheesecake Factory could not pay its rent for April and how many employees were being furloughed I felt like I had to do something. When I heard this I decided to purchase dinner from them a couple of times last week. I ordered more than I would usually do and tried to tip them better than I normally do. In the back of my mind I am hoping that there are others like me who could step up and help keep a business open and keep it operating. I hope that I was one of many who did this. I did the same thing with a hobby shop that I adore. Hard hit by this financial situation I called them up after being paid and purchased more than normal. Why would I do that? I want them to stay open and the business operating and functioning. I know these are challenging times and if you are unemployed then I would ask you to take care of yourself. Things will work out for you in time. I would also encourage you not to give up hope.

My Challenge to Everyone Who Reads this Post

If you read this post I would ask you to join me. Choose a few businesses and try and be more generous during this time. Support them and know that you are not only helping a business but also a family behind the business. You are also supporting your neighborhood and the city you call home. I acknowledge that many people may not be able to do this but the more people who can the better off we will be. The bottom line is that science needs to find a vaccine. That is what is needed. When one is found to deal with the COVID-19 virus that can help our country move forward. Our hope and investment needs to be in science. And they are working the issue hard from what I am reading. But its going to take time. But in the meantime let’s come together and support those businesses we know. That is one component of many issues going on right now. My question to you is will you join me in supporting a few businesses you know?

What if it takes Too Much Time?
Best estimates are a vaccine won’t be available until late 2021.
Effective treatments (and a lot are being tested) will probably not be available until this summer.
Ditto with antibody tests that take minutes to hours instead of DAYS to get results.
