At services at McLean Bible on Sunday November 24, 2019 David Platt apologized for his church mishandling an alleged sexual predator. While its a step in the right direction Platt did not name the alleged predator – Scott Woods – to the Southern Baptist mega church in the Washington, D.C. area. Since the Senior Pastor failed to do that, this blog will continue to notify the McLean Bible community of this alleged predator which is known to Fairfax County Police. There are some questions that remain which need to be pointed out.
“There is a beautiful transparency to honest disciples who never wear a false face and do not pretend to be anything but who they are.”
“Lack of clarity is always a sign of dishonesty.”
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

David Platt’s Simulcast on Something Needs to Change
David Platt starts to discuss the Scott Woods situation at 32:40.
McLean Bible is reeling with how the church mishandled an alleged predator situation in The Rock Ministries. To read the story of what took place at McLean, please go to, “How David Platt Never Learned From the Mark Aderholt Situation. The Disturbing Story of how McLean Bible Mishandled Scott Woods, an Alleged Predator in The Rock Ministries.” You can then read Anne Marie Miller’s response in, “Anne Marie Miller’s Response to David Platt’s Mishandling of the Scott Wood’s Situation at McLean Bible.” You can also read the comment from one of the mother’s of the alleged victims that resulted in this blog diving into this situation in, “Did McLean Bible Cover Up a Child Sexual Predatory Situation? A Comment on The Wondering Eagle Raises that Question.” Then this blog called for an independent investigation of McLean after Caring Well. That can be read in, “As #CaringWell Ends The Wondering Eagle is Calling for an Independent Investigation into McLean Bible. Regarding Scott Woods, Why Did David Platt’s Church Cover-up an Alleged Predator Who Groomed Teenagers for Planned Sexual Abuse?” Finally the following post looked at grooming and discussed as to how Scott Woods allegedly groomed victims in The Rock and his modus operandi. That can be read in, “What is Grooming? And how an Alleged Predator Operated in The Rock Ministries at David Platt’s McLean Bible.”
David Platt Apologizes for McLean Bible Mishandling an Alleged Predatory Situation
David Platt opened up in his series called, “The Story of Scripture” and stated that one of the more charged issues today in society is the care of children. Platt based his sermon off 1 Peter 5:1 -11. David talked about how every Christian needed a shepherd and how we are all sheep. Sheep are dirty animals, infested with lice, worms and other diseases. As the Senior Pastor of McLean Bible proceeded he said that pride is a major sin and that as a result of sin the world is full of suffering. We are all susceptible to attack on all sides in saying that the devil is like a roaring lion seeking to devour people. Demons are out on the prowl and there is a lion like adversary out to destroy your life. From your marriage to McLean Bible church itself the devil wants to destroy by isolating sheep from their shepherd. Platt also pointed out that the devil is on the prowl inside the church.
At 32:40 David said that he wanted to apply the verse in 1 Peter to protecting children. Every week you read in the newspaper, social media and more about the victimization of children. As technology changes predators are finding ways to work around the limits. This happens in camps, youth leagues, sports programs, schools and also churches are struggling. People don’t want to hear about it but David says we need to talk about predators in churches. Churches like McLean Bible are not immune from attack. David Platt then transitioned and became specific about a situation that took place at McLean Bible. The teaching pastor said that some people may be familiar with a situation that occurred before he went on staff at McLean. There was an adult volunteer who violated communications and boundaries and engaged in inappropriate conduct. A letter was sent in The Rock to parents and the person was removed from The Rock and a no-trespassing order was taken out against this adult male. McLean Bible experienced a wake up call and implemented better finger print checks, background and security checks as a result of the situation. David Platt said that he has been meeting over the past few months with the families that were hurt. And that parents who are hurting are still raising questions. David Platt said that these steps are just a start. Several months ago McLean Bible commissioned an outside group with the expertise in child safety to evaluate policies, procedures and practices. McLean says that they want to do everything they possibly can to protect children. The Senior Pastor of McLean Bible said that people should call the police if there is abuse or contact McLean Bible at 703-770-3833. The outside group coming has a goal to improve and protect children and to put McLean Bible ahead of the curve so that they can deal with such threats. McLean needs to improve and continue to improve in this area. This is not about staff or volunteers its about all of us working together to create a culture of care. He then goes on and talks about how society and people need to talk about this issue and people need to become more aware of it. Most abuse happens in a relationship where the abused knows their abuser. At minute 45:00 David Platt states that he is grieved over how many families have suffered and he states that McLean Bible could have cared for them better. In a time when these families should have been embraced, assisted and helped, many of these families instead feel ashamed, marginalized and ignored. And at 45:42 David Platt apologizes for how McLean Bible did not better displayed the care of Christ. McLean Bible failed and while they can not change the past they can change the future as how they can care for them. David goes on but that information as a summary is the most important take aways from the sermon. In writing this post I listened to part of the 11:00 sermon, and watched the 1:00. Other sources texted me from the church when this happened.
David Platt Still Will Not Name Scott Woods as the Alleged Predator; Also Families Affected Should Contact Fairfax Police
This blog will do what David Platt did not do this morning. It is something that needs to take place. The question that needs to be asked is this, is David Platt listening to lawyers? And as a result is that why he did not name the alleged predator to be Scott Woods? McLean Bible here is the information you need to know. Scott Woods ran a program in The Rock called “The Upper Room.” He worked with about 20 to 25 kids over a four to five year period. These teenagers Woods hand picked and chose. There could have been as many as 25 children who have been groomed to be abused. Scott Woods is an African-American male in his 30’s who appears to be on the run now that this information is out. He used to live in the Sterling, Virginia area and has moved into Washington, D.C. Scott is a smart man who went to Yale for undergrad and to law school at University of Tennessee. According to information this blog has obtained Fairfax Police are aware of this situation at McLean Bible. Woods allegedly destroyed his lap top computer and that resulted in Fairfax Police believing that he has groomed other people before in life. His trade-craft in allegedly grooming teenage males is disturbingly professional and according to what this blog has learned Woods has been one of the most clever predators that Fairfax Police has dealt with in recent years. If your family has been harmed or your teenage son comes forward with information contact Fairfax Police at 703-691-1234. Don’t go to McLean Bible go to Fairfax Police.
Other Concerns that Exist With What Platt Said
There are other concerns that arise from David Platt’s talk this morning. Let’s look at them as well.
- David Platt claimed that he has been working with the families over the last few months. This blog finds that information misleading. To the best of my knowledge Platt has not been meeting with families. While Platt responded quickly to one family within the last two weeks others have been ignored. This blog has heard this information from a direct source who has been caught up in this issue. Its this blog’s contention that as a celebrity pastor McLean has worked to protect Platt and keep him from the scandal. Remember earlier Platt was dragged into the Mark Aderholt and Anne Marie Miller situation which you can read about in, “Anne Marie Miller’s Alleged Sexual Abuse by Mark Aderholt, and Did the Southern Baptist’s International Missions Board Cover it Up? Plus David Platt’s Response.”
- Despite what David Platt stated, McLean Bible has not been concerned with children’s security. According to other information this blog has recently obtained McLean Bible cut the security team, also known as Congregational Care, by two bodies. Were the cuts budgetary and for financial reasons? This blog would like to get an answer to this question. Sometimes when churches are flipped by Calvinists programs are cannibalized and the money is diverted to church planting. Is that what happened? Was money from Congregational Care diverted to the New City Network? According to what this blog has learned this cut was done over the protest and concerns by McLean Bible’s security. The security staff made recommendations about staffing and hiring and the church leadership has intentionally ignored them.
- This blog would like to ask the question, why did we hear about the consulting firm for the first time this morning? This blog has good access to information about McLean Bible. Why is this information becoming public now? If I heard this earlier I would have written about this topic. But this is the first time this information is common knowledge. The last consulting firm that came through McLean Bible spent a Sunday observing. Then their recommendations were cherry picked in the end by leadership. Will that happen with another consulting firm?
- This is a personal question for Larry Cooper of the Elder Board. Where is the Elder Board in the Scott Woods situation? Did Larry Cooper and the Elder Board know about this and did they cover it up? Would Larry Cooper lie? Yes the same Larry Cooper who speaks about his service in the United States Army when he leads McLean Bible congregational meetings. Would Larry Cooper lie about a sexual predator at McLean Bible? This blog will say yes and believes that to be the case. If Larry can stand center stage in the auditorium and before 200 to 300 individuals and look them in the eye and lie about McLean Bible joining the Southern Baptist Convention then yes he can damn well lie about Scott Woods. The question that needs to be asked, is who failed to teach Larry Cooper character? Was it the United States Army or McLean Bible over the years? For more information you can read, “According to Christianity Today McLean Bible Joined the Southern Baptist Convention in 2016; If True Why did Elder Larry Cooper Lie Before the September 21, 2017 Town Hall Meeting?”
As I wind this post down the following needs to be said. This is a hard topic to pursue and it gives me no pleasure writing about this issue. Recently I interacted with one of the families involved in this mess and afterward when I walked to my car I wanted to vomit. The level of detail and effort that Scott Woods put into allegedly grooming teenagers was both frightening and troubling. Why does this blog keep coming back to the topic of sexual abuse? Each time when I think this blog hits the bottom in horrific stories another one pops up. This story comes up in a church I used to call home years ago. Its profoundly sad, disappointing and maddening all at the same time. This blog is asking for McLean Bible to respond to this situation appropriately. Don’t try to cover your rear end and think from that perspective. Don’t be guided by attorneys and seek their advice first. Come clean and let’s deal with this situation appropriately. If any of the families from the Scott Woods situation want to tell their story about McLean Bible and how this was handled they will have a platform here to discuss what transpired.
