A progressive Christian group is operating a petition to get the IRS and the Commonwealth of Virginia to investigate Liberty University’s finances. This brief post explores the problem and explains that it needs to be conservative evangelicals who push back against the financial issues.
“Acting is all about honesty. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”
Be glad, people of Zion,
rejoice in the Lord your God,
for he has given you the autumn rains
because he is faithful.
He sends you abundant showers,
both autumn and spring rains, as before.
Joel 2:23 NIV
Liberty students protesting
A progressive Christian group called Faithful America has started an on-line petition to get the IRS or the Virginia Attorney General to investigate the financial issues at Jerry Falwell Jr’s Liberty. Close to 11,000 have signed the petition and they are hoping to get 15,000 this weekend. Faithful America is associated with the National Council of Churches and was founded in 2004. Here is how the petition is being pushed.
Multiple news outlets have just revealed the corrupt — and potentially criminal — ways that Jerry Falwell, Jr., runs Liberty University. Even Falwell’s own students have begun to protest him on campus.
According to the reports, Falwell runs the Christian college through a culture of fear. He has offensively mocked his students as “retarded.” Professors receive one-year contracts so they can be quickly dismissed if they speak out. Even the board chairman was removed after questioning Falwell’s support for Donald Trump.
The problem isn’t just Falwell’s tyranny — it’s also his corruption. According to Politico, Falwell frequently uses school funds to benefit his friends and family. One official complained, “We’re not a school; we’re a real estate hedge fund.”
Falwell has responded by mocking the reporters, calling for an FBI investigation into his critics, and even retweeting a headline that says he “won’t turn the other cheek” as Jesus taught. Nothing about this Trump-like behavior can be called Christian.
It’s clear there is more than enough evidence to warrant an official investigation into Falwell’s apparent corruption and misconduct. Let’s show Liberty’s student protesters that they are not alone, and demand better from a school that claims to represent our faith!
Resistance to Jerry Fallwell Jr Needs to Come from Conservatives
Here is the problem with Faithful America’s efforts. And I write this in all sincerity. A progressive organization will have problems with Liberty and many often have. In order to bring about change and to challenge the status quo those who are conservative evangelicals need to speak up and challenge the financial statements and more. In situations like these and in greater evangelical Christianity it needs to be the conservatives who are upset about the finances who need to take a lead. Right now Jerry Falwell Jr can attack these progressives and state that they are not “real Christians.” If we are going to have a serious discussion about these issues then we also need to acknowledge what needs to change in evangelicalism today. This is going to be a brief post but I want to get this up.
