An open letter to the former mouth piece of Sovereign Grace who attends Acts 29 Redeemer Arlington. Is Carolyn mellowing with age and maturing? She is not pushing the 9 Marks or other Neo-Calvinist items as much. Plus she is also speaking about sex abuse on her Twitter feed. Will she cross the bridge and speak to the abuse issues in Sovereign Grace?
“I guess real maturity, which most of us never achieve, is when you realize that you’re not the center of the universe.”
“Maturity is achieved when a person accepts life as full of tension.”
Josh Loft Liebman
“Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.”
I was studying your Twitter account and I noticed a few things and wanted to make some observations. First let me say that your comments about Donald Trump I appreciate and I would be on the same page also. I am not a believer of Christian Nationalism. And while you are are frustrated about the press not understanding the differences in evangelicals I addressed that a while back at this blog. You can read that post in, “What The Wondering Eagle Appreciates and Respects About Neo-Calvinism.” And yet there are a number of things I noticed when I find encouraging. Once you were one of the mouthpieces for Sovereign Grace. You boasted and blasted to the world how you left your church of Covenant Life Church to join the Redeemer Arlington church plant. I had a brush with someone and encountered abuse from someone there. Jordan Kauflin failed to address it and its unsolved. The last time I wrote about you was a few days after my Mom’s funeral. You can read that post in, “With a Delta Airline Delay in Shreveport, Louisiana Does Redeemer Arlington’s Carolyn McCulley Believe the Lord is Sovereign?”
I noticed that you are no longer pushing 9 Marks or much of the Acts 29 theology. I saw you re-tweeted some Shane Claiborne which surprised me. I also noticed that you were talking about Rachael Denhollander and re-tweeting Diane Langberg. That surprised me and I would like to ask what happened? What happened Carolyn that you are tweeting issues that a few years ago you would not? Is it the fact that you are aging and you are rethinking some aspects of life? Are you bothered by the sex abuse crisis that took place inside Sovereign Grace? I would like to ask you what happened? In any event I would like to encourage you to keep digging and looking at things from a new perspective. And while I say all this there is one bridge that you will need to cross one day and if you do then I will have a great amount of respect. You need to acknowledge the sex abuse issues inside Sovereign Grace. You need to express your anger for how C.J. Mahaney covered up sex abuse and you need to speak to how that is not acceptable. Redeemer’s leadership also needs to address that issue. From Eric Simmons to Jordan Kauflin. I wrote about your pastor recently in, “The Pimping of God: Bob Kauflin Along with his Sons Jordan and Devon and the Evangelical Industrial Complex. Plus how Corruption is Transferred From One Generation to the Next.” This blog would have a lot of respect if Jordan Kauflin came clean and expressed disappointment. Let me just say that you learn a lot about people in how they react in certain situations. For example I lost friendships over not getting involved in certain churches. I also lost friends and ministry contacts because I rejected Christian Nationalism and Donald Trump. The time to speak up about these issues is now.
I know this post is going to be read by a lot of people at Redeemer Arlington. I have received feedback once on how people inside the church read and discuss some of these posts in Bible studies. Redeemer really misunderstood me and what I was asking for. Some of the posts I composed about Redeemer were hard to do. I certainly don’t take pleasure in them. From my vantage point as someone who experienced spiritual abuse from a leader once at Redeemer that door is always open to discussion. None of this conflict has to exist. Its because people choose to allow it to exist.
I hope this post gives you something to think about as well. The same is true for the Redeemer leadership. Well its almost 11:30 and I need to get to bed. I focused on another post but I wanted to squeeze this one in as well.
Holler if you ever want to meet.
