The New City Network – the church planting arm of McLean Bible is having their annual gala at the Museum of the Bible on October 11, 2019. Thabiti Anyabwile of Anacostia River Church is the key note speaker. New City Network is going to celebrate some of the church planting they have done. This blog would like to ask them, amidst the scandal and corruption what exactly is there to celebrate?
“Celebration comes when the common features of life are redeemed.”
Richard J Foster
Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
John 6:29 NIV
The line up and schedule for the New City Network gala was recently released. The guest speaker is Thabiti Anyabwile of Anacostia River Church. Before we get into the gala let’s look at Thabiti.
Who is Thabiti Anyabwile?
Thabiti Anyabwile is one of the pastors at Anacostia River Church in SE Washington, D.C. Thabiti comes from Lexington, North Carolina and Mark Dever has had a great deal of influence over him. Before coming to Washington, D.C. he was the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Grand Cayman. He is very much influenced by some social justice issues as well, for example he has talked about why reparations for slavery should take place. Thabiti has published a number of articles in differing organizations to include Desiring God, 9 Marks and The Gospel Coalition where he is also a council member. He blogs at The Front Porch. In addition to blogging he has written a number of books that include, “Finding Faithful Elders and Deacons“, “What Is a Healthy Church Member?” , “The Faithful Preacher” , “The Decline of African American Theology: From Biblical Faith to Cultural Captivity” , “Captivated: Beholding the Mystery of Jesus Death and Resurrection” and “The Gospel for Muslims: An Encouragement to Share Christ with Confidence.” In addition he has also contributed to, “The Gospel as Center: Renewing Our Faith and Reforming Our Ministry Practices” , “Thinking. Loving. Doing.” , “Holy, Holy, Holy: Proclaiming the Perfections of God” and “For the Fame of God’s Name: Essays in Honor of John Piper.” This blog has written about Thabiti Anyabwile in the context of the Sovereign Grace Ministry scandal and child sex abuse cover up by C.J. Mahaney. You can read that in, “Is CJ Mahaney the “Bill Cosby of Neo-Calvinism?” The Mahaney Conversation that Thabiti Anyabwile Needs to Have.” Then I also addressed what Anyabwile wrote when Donald Trump referred to a number of nations in Africa and Central America as “shitholes.” You can read about that in, “Thabiti Anyabwile Address the President’s Comments on Haiti, El Salvador and Africa: While Neo-Calvinism has Many Issues the Movement Addresses Racism Well.”
An Overview at the New City Network Gala at the Museum of the Bible
On October 11, 2019 at the Museum of the Bible the New City Network is holding a gala. The New City Network is the church planting arm of McLean Bible. This is the second time that this gala is being held. The master of ceremonies is David Platt of McLean Bible Tysons Corner and Mike Kelsey of McLean Bible Montgomery County. They are going to be celebrating the church planting they have done at this gala. After all New City serves over 50 church plants with most being in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. If you want to attend one should have deep pockets. Tickets start out at $200 and can go all the way up to $10,000. I considered attending just so I could write about it for this blog. But when I saw the cost, I thought “forget that!”
What is there to Celebrate? How has God Moved in the Corruption of the New City Network?
The Wondering Eagle would like to pose the following question to David Platt, Clint Clifton, Mike Kelsey and Thabiti Anyabwile. What exactly is there to celebrate at the Museum of the Bible? Are you celebrating the proliferation of corruption? You had the theological coup of McLean Bible and the purging of 140 pastors and staff. Mike Kelsey like Dave Young were one of the few who survived the drama behind the scenes. Are you going to celebrate the fact that many former staff couldn’t find jobs at their age and some are experiencing physical and mental health issues? Are you going to celebrate how McLean Bible mishandled a volunteer in The Rock Ministries who tried to groom some young adults for sexual purposes? According to what this blog has learned he is in his 30’s, lives in Leesburg, Virginia and the last I heard is still on the McLean Bible internal computer system and not flagged or purged after he tried to groom some teenagers for sexual abuse. Is that what you are going to celebrate at The Museum of the Bible?
Or another way to look at is is that you are going to celebrate church planting. Are you going to toast and cheer to the nepotism of Dale Sutherland and Nate Crew occurring at CityLight Church in Falls Church, Virginia? You can read more at, “CityLight Church in Falls Church, Virginia Along With Nate Crew and Dale Sutherland and the Evangelical Problem of Nepotism.” Are you going to celebrate how Kenji Adachi All Poeple’s Community Church helped plant Mosaic City Church? Kenji Adachi came from Fellowship Memphis, an Acts 29 Church in Memphis, Tennessee that covered up the voyeurism and manufacturing of child pornography by the worship pastor inside a church? You can read more in, “When a Church Plant is the Fruit of Sin. Looking at Aaron Nichols Mosaic City Church as Supported by Kenji Adachi’s All People’s Community Church.” That is a lot to celebrate is it not? The flourishing of nepotism, sex abuse, child pornography and more. Clint Clifton has a lot to grin about does he not. Well hopefully this post will get McLean Bible and New City Network something to contemplate. This blog will work through more New City Network churches and examine and study them.
