In Dealing With Grief a Touching Song From The Secret Garden About Loving Someone After Death

Earlier I was listening to the soundtrack from the Broadway musical The Secret Garden. There is a haunting song on there that explores love through death. Every time I listen to it my thinking goes to Mom and Dad.

Forgive me
Can you forgive me
And hold me in your heart
And find some new way to love me
Now that we’re apart?
How could I know I would never hold you?
Never again in this world, but oh
Sure as you breathe, I am there inside you
How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?

How Could I Ever Know

One of the books that came on my radar is a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett called The Secret Garden. Its one of the most celebrated books in British literature. I plan to read it and reflect on it but form what I do know one of the themes of the book is death and loss and starting anew. In 1991 the classic book was turned into a successful Broadway musical that created what some consider to be one of the most haunting and moving scores. When Lucy Simon wrote the music she did so with the intent to address the topic of healing from pain. One of the most emotional songs is between the main character Archibald Craven who is played by Mandy Patinkin and his deceased wife who he misses. The role of the deceased wife is Lily Craven and is played by Rebecca Luker.  The song is a duet between a man who is in deep grief over the loss of his wife, and the ghost of his dead wife. Its one of the saddest and yet beautiful songs I have heard.

Earlier I was listening to this soundtrack in the car and every time I hear this song I think of Mom and Dad. I think of the grief, the loss, loving someone who is gone and trying to move forward. So I will re-print the lyrics below and leave you with the song.

How could I know I would have to leave you?
How could I know I would hurt you so?
You were the one I was born to love!
Oh, how could I ever know?
How could I ever know?

How can I say to go on without me?
How, when I know you still need me so?
How can I say not to dream about me?
How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?

Forgive me
Can you forgive me
And hold me in your heart
And find some new way to love me
Now that we’re apart?
How could I know I would never hold you?
Never again in this world, but oh
Sure as you breathe, I am there inside you
How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?

[ARCHIBALD]
How can I hope to go on without you?
How can I know where you’d have me go?
How can I bear not to dream about you?
Oh, how can I let you go?

[LILY]
How could I ever know?

[ARCHIBALD]
All I need…

[LILY]
Is there in the garden!

[ARCHIBALD]
All I would ask…

[LILY]
Is care for the child of our love!
Come, go with me, safe I will keep you

[ARCHIBALD]
Where you would lead me
There I would

[LILY]
There I would, there we would

[ARCHIBALD and LILY]
There we will go
Oh! How could I know?
Tell me how could I know?
Never to know you would ever leave me!
How could we know?

[LILY]
How could I ever know?
