Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, Pennsylvania joined 9 Marks in the past year. 9 Marks is the authoritarian ministry of Mark Dever and is known for its practice of church discipline. Steve Estes is best remembered for practicing church discipline on an alleged domestic abuse victim who knows she could be dead. In the opinion of The Wondering Eagle Brick Lane will be a nice fit for 9 Marks.
“Corruption is authority plus monopoly minus transparency.“
“Welcome to Brick Lane Community Church. We’re a community of men and women, young and old, devoted to following Jesus. Whether you’ve been a Christian your whole life or if you’ve never set foot in a church before and are simply curious about who Jesus is, you are welcome here. We meet on Sunday mornings at 10:15.”
Brick Lane on 9 Marks
I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard[f] and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word[g] without fear.
Philippians 1:12-14 ESV
There is some news coming out of Elverson, Pennsylvania that I need to report about. This blog broke and looked at Steve Estes’ Community Evangelical Free Church. This church changed its name to Brick Lane Community Church in the past year. The latest news is that Steve Estes church has joined 9 Marks in the past year.
Mark Dever and 9 Marks
What is 9 Marks?
9 Marks started out as the Center for Church Reform in the early 2000’s and changed its name to 9 Marks. The original program was started by Mark Dever and Matt Schmucker. The concept came out of a letter Mark Dever wrote when he was at the University of Cambridge in 1991. The letter was to a Baptist church in Topsfield, Massachusetts. The letter Mark Dever wrote was later turned into a book called “9 Marks of a Healthy Church” which was first published in 2000. While 9 Marks claims that its about creating healthy churches, in this writer’s opinion its actually about advancing Calvinism. 9 Marks is known for practicing church discipline. I wrote about the problems with 9 Marks a while back which you can read in, “9 Marks: What is it? How Mark Dever Undermined it and Made it Worthless.”
Recalling the Behavior of a Rogue EFCA Church that Practiced Church Discipline on an Alleged Domestic Abuse Victim Who Knows She Could be Dead
This blog broke the story of Community Evangelical Free Church in Elverson and the problems within. What had happened is that Brock Estes who is the son of Senior Pastor Steve Estes had allegedly raped his wife and domestically abused her. This happened because of alleged alcohol problems and a sleep disorder. On another occasion he allegedly loaded a gun and pointed it at his wife. His wife knew that she could be killed and and when she filed for divorce Steve Estes guided the church through church discipline and then excommunication process. The very behavior of the church tore the community of Elverson, Pennsylvania apart and it reached the top of the EFCA leadership in Minneapolis, Minnesota. You can read the original posts that this blog wrote a couple of years back in, “Steve Estes and Community Evangelical Free Church in Elverson, Pennsylvania: A Painful Story of Domestic Abuse, Inappropriate Church Discipline, and Failed EFCA Polity” and “Hurit’s Public Excommunication While Alleged Criminal Activity by Brock Estes is Withheld from the Congregation: Appeals for Help Fall on Deaf Ears to Steve Musser of the Eastern District and National Evangelical Free Church of America.” The EFCA actually intervened and the church broke away as the denomination wanted the church to repent and back down on the church discipline of an alleged domestic abuse victim.
Brick Lane Will Complement 9 Marks Perfectly
There is not much to say about this situation expect the following point. I believe Brick Lane Community Church will complement 9 Marks perfectly. 9 Marks is all about church discipline and is known for pushing that theology. What better than a church that practiced church discipline on an alleged domestic abuse victim who knows she could be dead. Steve Estes and Mark Dever are really too peas in a pod. They both can abuse church discipline and likewise nether one will face church discipline. Previously I wrote about how Brick Lane would be more dangerous without accountability and today there is none. This is a church to avoid, in many ways its had become cult like from the last information that I heard.
