Recalling a Meeting With Eric Simmons in 2015 to Inform him of Blogging About Redeemer Arlington

In 2015 before I launched The Wondering Eagle I met with Eric Simmons from Redeemer Arlington. The point of the meeting was to inform him that I was going to commence a blog that wrote about his former Sovereign Grace church. After meeting him in January of 2015 I started the process of organizing and buying the necessary platform.

“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.”

Virginia Woolf

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

Maya Angelou

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV

As 2014 turned began to turn into 2015 I still had a major problem. There was the unresolved false accusation that I dealt with from someone in a leadership position from Redeemer Arlington.

Making a Decision to Write

I wrestled with what to do. All I wanted was the situation to be resolved. After all a year earlier in 2013 I approached nearly 130 people for forgiveness from a faith crisis. But the situation with the former care group leader of a Sovereign Grace church remained unresolved. I was asked to tell my story on another blog and did so. But there was still the frustration and not knowing how to proceed forward. After giving it much thought I decided to open a blog and hope that could bring resolution to this in the long term perspective. But there was another issue as well. What about the people in the community of Arlington, Virginia who Redeemer was trying to get involved? It became a goal of mine to educate and try and get knowledge into their possession and keep people away. While I can’t keep a person out of Redeemer, a blog could educate and give people the information to make a decision. As it turned out in the course of time this also happened with other churches in the Washington, D.C. area or elsewhere. After I made a decision to write about Redeemer Arlington I made a decision to meet with the senior pastor from that former Sovereign Grace and inform him in person.

A Meeting with Eric Simmons from Redeemer Arlington in January of 2015

I reached out to Eric Simmons in late 2014. The times got mixed up and the first meeting I was a no show. That was my fault. Then we set up a second meeting in January of 2015. We were to meet at Northside Social and finally did meet. Before the meeting I was nervous about doing so but decided to proceed ahead. Eric offered to buy coffee and I polity declined. We sat for about 15 to 20 minutes and talked. He shared his upbringing and how he got involved in Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I shared with him the false accusation mess and he told me that at one point Andrew White asked him, “What is Sovereign Grace?” It raised the question was this military officer having a faith crisis by being involved in a questionable organization? Eric suggest speaking to Jordan Kauflin which in time I did. In the conversation while facing him I told Eric of my plans to start a blog writing about Redeemer Arlington. Looking at me with that red beard and glasses a very exasperated former Sovereign Grace pastor said, “FINE!” I could tell that he was not happy with the decision that was made. Next I explained the parameters of what I would write about and what I would not. My boundaries were very much established and he appreciated that communication. The meeting ended and we shook hands and I proceeded on my way to buy the Word Press account and domain information.

Also Deciding to Analyze the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA)

I had a background in the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) and I realized that there is not a blog that wrote about issues in the EFCA. Given the issues I saw in the organization  in the D.C. area and elsewhere I decided to also work on that area as well. I was involved in the EFCA in California and briefly in Wisconsin and had the background in many ways. A perspective could be brought to the table that I had. And I also saw the issues of Sovereign Grace touching the EFCA organization. With that I decided to also do a deep dive into the EFCA. With that decision in the next month I had my first post and started a journey that took me on a strange and difficult journey. That was how The Wondering Eagle started. This is a post that I have been meaning to do for a few years but finally finished.
