A Second Open Letter to John Secrest of Harvest Bible Chapel Naples

Another open letter to John Secrest of Harvest Bible Chapel Naples asking him to speak up and condemn the lawsuit against The Elephant’s Debt. In addition James MacDonald needs to be challenged on his behavior in regards to the lawsuit. This blog has heard good things about John and is hoping he can do the right thing so that when the books are written about Harvest Bible Chapel scandal he will be remembered in a positive light.

“It’s not sincereity, it is truth which frees us, because it transforms us. It tears us away from our inmost slavery.”

Henri de Lubac

“Silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly.”

Mahatma Gandhi

“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world…would do this, it would change the earth.”

William Faulkner

Wash and make yourselves clean.
    Take your evil deeds out of my sight;
    stop doing wrong.
17 Learn to do right; seek justice.
    Defend the oppressed.
Take up the cause of the fatherless;
    plead the case of the widow.

Isiah 1:16-17 NIV

John Secrest and his family

John-

This is going to be a brief open letter to you. I wrote another one to you recently which you can read right here. I just want to state that as a writer I have heard good things about you from different sources. You have been described as compassionate and kind. Its with that in mind that I want to raise some issues with you. This blog still hopes that you will go back to the EFCA as that environment is much healthier than Harvest Bible Chapel. And I say that with writing some hard stories about  the EFCA. I have  been told that some don’t think Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago will last beyond February. The problems are piling up fast. They are $47 million dollars in “Gospel Centered Debt.” Stories from me and other writers and bloggers are coming out about Harvest Bible Chapel. Its my understanding that James MacDonald is down there now in Naples. And that James will be down there for three months. My personal belief is that James is getting ready to bail from Chicago. That he is going to pull a “Mark Driscoll” and flee the scandal and corruption that he created. This blog remains concerned for you John because I don’t think James MacDonald plans to keep you around. Not according to some of my sources from Harvest that are very good. And James has a history of treating people in an exceptionally poor manner. So I hope you still will walk away from Harvest before you or your family endures any spiritual abuse.

But there is one topic I need to need to raise with you John. Its one point that you need to speak out on and challenge James MacDonald on. You need to tell him to drop the lawsuit against Julie Roys and The Elephant’s Debt. This issue is becoming your issue John because of James MacDonald being down in Naples. And the fact of the matter is this, why does a pastor stay silent when James MacDonald is hurting others? James MacDonald is all over the place on the lawsuit. We both know that MacDonald is a narcissist. He’s drunk on fame, power and having his ear tickled with praise. That is why he craves the stage and that is why he hangs around people like Mancow Muller. Evidence has come forward that I wrote about that suggests that James MacDonald fired off the lawsuit possibly because he was influenced by Mancow Muller who has a history of using lawsuits as a means to get attention. Then on December 31, 2018 in a video James MacDonald said his elders wanted to sue and he decided to go along. You can read both in, “Did Mancow Muller Incite James MacDonald to Take Legal Action Against The Elephant’s Debt?” and “Is James MacDonald Blaming his Elders at Harvest Bible Chapel for the Lawsuit Against The Elephant’s Debt?” James motives for the lawsuit is warped. And the Gospel you believe in is taking a massive hit in Chicago and Florida and across the United States. So here is what I am going to ask of you John. Can you speak out and call the lawsuit unjust? Can you challenge James MacDonald and tell him to call it off. Tell him its not appropriate and out of line. This is hurting a lot of people including James MacDonald.

Your reputation precedes you John based off what I have heard. So I ask you to do the right thing and be on the right side of this scandal. Years from now historians, anthropologists, and sociologists will write on Harvest Bible Chapel. If you doubt me stop and look at what is starting to be written about Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill. One of the newest books is called, “Biblical Porn: Affect, Labor, and Pastor Mark Driscoll’s Evangelical Empire.” 5 or 10 years from now can you imagine similar books being published about Harvest Bible Chapel? Perhaps with names like “Elephant Porn: Power, Money and James MacDonald’s Evangelical Empire.” When books like this come out its important to be on the right side of history. And that is my plea to you. Try and get this lawsuit canceled and think of the church and its witness. I hope you will receive this well. I wish you the best John.

Very Respectfully,

David Bonner

  1. I bet he has already been on the receiving end of spiritual abuse. Wonder if he recognizes it and if so wonder what will he do with it, hide it like so many others have done over the years at Harvest? Matt Stowell comes to mind. If he had spoken out earlier how much would have changed?? If Joseph Stowell would speak out now. What could be his reasons not to?? It’s better for people not to know?? It’s actually I think grievous to the Holy Spirit to not speak truth, it’s not trusting God. Who is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. God has not given a spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind. Seems like the root of harvest gives people anything but a sound mind.

  3. I am no longer with Harvest.

    I am going to email Matt soon, and I appreciate his response, though I am not in any way mad at him, as my time with Harvest was beneficial despite some issues I observed with senior leadership.

    I am going to publicly identify myself and share my story in the next few days.

  5. HBC just today fired John Secrest for wanting his church back! The abuse is completed, now they are stabbing him in the back, just like they did to Scott Phelps. SOOOO, is HBC going to call Secrest “Satanic” now for wanting his church back??? Scott Phelps merged his church into HBC also, and deeply regretted the mistake a couple years later. This action is SO BLATANTLY evil that even HBC regulars are going to take stock of it.
