Exploring How James MacDonald Tests Cult-Like Loyalty: The “Mark of the Beast” the Vertical Tattoo. Plus a Disturbing Situation in Phoenix, Arizona. Also how Coins are Used Inside Harvest

This post at The Wondering Eagle looks at how James MacDonald tests his followers loyalty. It can either be through the Vertical tattoo or the coin Harvest Bible Chapel pastors are expected to carry. In addition this blog learned that at the final pastors and wives retreat before the fracture of the Fellowship, James MacDonald allegedly put many of his pastors in a difficult position and pressured them to get the Vertical Church tattoo.

“Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice.”

Woodrow Wilson

“You cannot buy loyalty; you cannot buy the devotion of hearts, minds, and souls. You have to earn these things.”

Clarence Francis

“The only people I owe my loyalty to are those who never made me question theirs.”

There is some more information about James MacDonald and Harvest Bible Chapel that this blog has acquired. Part of this is already known, but the incident in Phoenix this blog is going to reveal I don’t believe has been shared before. This post is hard to do because there are a lot of gaps. Therefore what I am going to do is do a separate subheading and list some of the questions that exist. If people can fill in the gaps this blog will be grateful. Let’s start this post with a look at the Vertical tattoo.

The Vertical Tattoo

One of the weirdest aspects to Harvest Bible Chapel is the Vertical tattoo. It appears that James MacDonald got the tattoo during the Vertical Church Tour in 2012. During that tour James MacDonald visited 40 cities on a two month bus tour and he decided to get a tattoo for the event. The tattoo was shown off by James MacDonald in the video in which he is interviewed by Mark Driscoll. You can read about it here. It appears from my research that the video has been taken down. I wonder if The Elephant’s Debt has it achieved or if someone out there does have a copy in their possession.  James MacDonald was not the only one to get the Vertical tattoo during the Vertical Church Tour. In the following Facebook post a number of people discussed how they got one in Dallas, Texas. The tattoo is really just the Harvest Bible Chapel logo that is done on James right arm. From what my sources tell me James is fiercely proud of his tattoo and he boasts of it. What this blog has learned is that some of the former members of Harvest Bible Chapel refer to James MacDonald’s tattoo as the “Mark of the Beast.” James MacDonald uses the tattoo to support Harvest branding, marketing and to do something “shocking.” This will provide a transition into a disturbing situation that happened with James MacDonald and a number of Harvest Bible Chapel pastors in Phoenix, Arizona in 2017.

An Incident in Phoenix, Arizona that Illustrates How Harvest is a Cult

This information came from one source who shared it with me. I took the information and was able to independently confirm this with another source. The second source is also solid. So this information is solid. This took place at the regular senior pastor and wives retreat at Phoenix, Arizona. This was he final retreat before James MacDonald blew up Harvest Bible Fellowship on an impulsive rage. At the retreat James MacDonald paid for a tattoo article for Harvest Bible Chapel pastors to get a Vertical Church tattoo. The Vertical tattoo was free and James MacDonald allegedly wanted his pastors to get the tattoo. This created a stir and many pushed back and MacDonald relented. But James MacDonald got the message across. So a number of Harvest Bible Chapel pastors lined up one by one to get the Vertical tattoo. James MacDonald had wanted them and many blindly went along and got a tattoo. This blog would like to find out which pastors got a Vertical church tattoo. If you know please comment below and I can create a separate post that keeps track of who got this tattoo. It will be able to allow me and those who read about James MacDonald to see what kind of influence he had among Harvest Bible Fellowship pastors and more. For me this information further confirms that Harvest Bible Chapel is a cult.

Questions That Need to be Asked

  1. Does the XLT have tattoos?
  2. To join the XLT do you have to get the Vertical tattoo?
  3. What led James MacDonald to embrace the tattoo?
  4. How many Harvest Bible Chapel pastors have the Vertical tattoo?
  5. Why a tattoo? Why not jewelry? Or clothing? Or some other item?
  6. Is the Vertical Church tattoo been pushed among the congregation?
  7. How many members or attenders have gotten the Vertical Church tattoo?
  8. Have there been people from Harvest who had the tattoo and have it removed?

How Harvest Bible Chapel Uses Coins

There is another issue that also exists. Others from my understanding have already looked at this topic. Harvest Bible Chapel gives out coins to their pastors. I asked around for a picture of one and was told by different sources that when a person leaves Harvest they have to turn it back in. Now to give you perspective there is nothing wrong with Harvest having a coin. Coins can be found in law enforcement, military and government and other settings. Coins can be called challenge coins or when someone retires or leaves they can be given a coin. Let me give you some examples to make my point. Here is an example a coin for law enforcement. For example it looks like the Los Angeles Police Department has challenge coins. The Chicago Police Department also has challenge coins. In the United States military challenge coins are a part of the culture. Here are some examples for the United States Marine Corps. Now what can happen is that different bases or units can have their own coin. Another example of coins is among the federal government. For example here is a coin from the National Reconnaissance Office for sale on EBAY. So the point of all this is that I don’t want you to think that there is a problem in having a coin. Many professional organizations have a coin.

What is different about Harvest Bible Chapel is how they use the coins. From what I have heard from my sources Harvest Bible Chapel pastors allegedly have to carry one at all times. Harvest leadership will stop, demand for the pastor to produce the coin. Many pastors live in fear of James MacDonald and the last thing you want is to not have a coin. If you are asked to produce a coin and you don’t have it you will be yelled at and ridiculed. It appears that there might be some stories inside Harvest Bible Chapel regarding coins and individual situations. If you are in the know and would like to share here at The Wondering Eagle you are free to do so. According to one former Harvest pastor I interacted with I was told that when you leave Harvest you have to turn in the coin. You are not allowed to keep it.

The Issue of Loyalty

In cults many cult leaders will take some kind of action or try and create an environment that will reward loyalty to their leader. They can use loyalty as a means to test the flock and weed out the “week” and consolidate their base. They will test, push the limits and see what they can get away with. I want to be careful with the analogy I am about to share but let me share  one example that came to mind. Before the mass murder and suicide in Jonestown in 1978, Jim Jones used to test the members who followed him. For example Jones would test his members and rehearsed the planned suicide. People lined up and took the flavor aid in mass. Afterward Jim Jones stated that they passed the test.

Now please understand I am not saying that James MacDonald is Jim Jones. That is not why I am saying this. I am using that incident in Jonestown as an example of how loyalty would be tested. All cults have means to test their members or followers. Many cults create personality cults as well. One of the things I have heard is that in Harvest Bible Chapel there are some pastors who have tried to emulate James MacDonald. This is not unique as this also happened in Sovereign Grace Ministries. In Sovereign Grace there were pastors who imitated C.J. Mahaney. There were people in the Sovereign Grace movement who shaved their head and tried to make themselves look like Mahaney. A couple of years back I wrote about the personality cult of the celebrity pastor using John Piper as an example. You can read that in, “The Little Red Book…of John Piper?

What you see in this post is about loyalty tests that James MacDonald has implemented. James wants to control people and as a narcissist he wants to the center of attention. The loyalty tests come in different forms. From requiring Harvest Bible Chapel pastors to produce a coin to pressuring pastors at a retreat to get a Vertical Church tattoo. In the end James MacDonald is testing his followers just like Jim Jones and every other cult leader has tested their followers.  The goal of these tests is not only to test loyalty but to see what you can get away with. How far can I push the envelope with questionable behavior? How far will people continue to support me? Healthy belief systems don’t function in this context. People are allowed to chose how they want to act. In other situations people are allowed to walk away in freedom. A healthy system does not require such loyalty tests. I can’t emphasize this enough. People need to leave Harvest Bible Chapel. They need to stop supporting the machine with their tithes or their presence. The information presented here should give you pause. Red flags should be going off in your mind. If you have loved ones at any Harvest Bible Chapel you should be concerned about their health and concerned for them. But now is the time to leave Harvest Bible Chapel.

  1. This article is so ridiculous it’s laughable. I am involved at Harvest. Most of the leaders I know actually do not have a tattoo. I myself am a leader at one of the campuses and I have never been pressured to get one. Actually, no one has ever even brought it up. I have absolutely no merchandise with that logo. Nor am I planning on getting anything with it. I myself am not crazy about this logo being plastered everywhere and I have mentioned it to quite a few people in the church. As far as the coin. Are you kidding me? Pastor’s are ridiculed if they are caught not carrying it? I read this out loud to two other Harvest pastors and they are laughing at how absolutely ridiculous this is.

Why do these people hate Pastor James Macdonald and Harvest? I think it’s clear. They hate all successful churches!

If you want to see INSTANTLY that this site is the devil’s dominion go to Harvest where they will force you to drink poisoned koolaid and get their mark of the beast upon you and their secret decoder coin in your pocket! Booo ha ha!!!!

      Just kidding.

      Haha!

That’s how they portray a church. A normal church.

You won’t reckognize anything said here actually at Harvest Bible Church.

But you WILL see a Harvest Church that is successful at winning souls. This is why these weak minded hellbound minions on here float all kinds of laughable lies!

      No fellow humans-
at Harvest you’ll find many different kinds of people amoung the many 1000’s that attend. All have sinned and fallen short. All are trying to make their way through a very tough fallen world.
Just like YOU. Some are great. Others are jerks. See for yourself so your not just another dumb “headless Unicorn” repeating lies in this echo chamber of Christianaphobes run by a church hater out of DC.

“im good, why would i waste my time with people who have no intention to listen and only to spread lies about a church/ group of people because of unreasonableness and Hatred?”

Has this member been programed to call people with differing views “liars” and judge those that call out child sexual abuse cover up as having “hatred” in their hearts?

I agree, “Unreasonableness” is a problem. You can’t reason with a supreme leaders that has complete control.

Satan literally means “the deceiver.” And this site exists to deceive. Congratulations because you’re doing some very dark work here.

I’ve been attacked in the most Goddless of ways. Hateful hurtful and filled with untruths.

Jesus was a friend of sinners and Pastor James McDonald could do well by trying to reach and help a radio host or any other influencer in Chicago or elsewhere that could proclaim to the masses the truth of Jesus Christ. You have a problem with that too?

He doesn’t just preach to the converted or “to the choir.”
And that upsets you? What bastard people.

I would never get the vertical tattoo but yourstory here is so so filled with lies.
    Just flat out lies!

I hope they sue you too!!!

    Seriously!
Do you have any interest in the truth whatsoever?

Nobody got that vertical tattoo for any other reason than they think it’s cool! And all already HAD other but now are saved and have added Christ, Crosses, and that cool vertices logo. And it IS cool. Jealous?

A bunch of men trying to live Christ centered Bible-based honest lives in their marriages and in their business and you slam THAT?
Some got the Vertical logo. Which had produced some popular music around the world. And THATS evil? Would you rather they got a pearl jam tattoo or something such as that? Maybe some Chinese writing? Something tribal? Anything but something that points up towards Jesus Christ?

    You all are lost.

    Pray.

I’m inviting ALL of you to meet me at Harvest (but only when Pastor James is there LIVE) for some GOD and Bible.

“In an attempt to destroy Starbucks Pastor James serves coffee in his lobby!”

“How sexist is this Bible of theirs that they don’t think WOMEN can make a decent cup of Joe?!? Read about it in HEbrews.”

Lying is easy for you character assassins. But only Gods TRUTH will set you free!

        And now another shocker!

I actually go to other churches too. I am NOT a Harvest member.

Haven’t found the perfect home exactly YET.

I don’t like video services. So when it’s a replay or guest I go elsewhere. But Pastor James LIVE in the pulpit is hard to beat!

Although I do find the Macdonald boys do have preaching abilities.

A Pastor Moe (think that’s what he’s called) knocked me out the only time I saw him.

I responded as a fellow human because of the ridiculous and obvious lies here. That’s what prompted me to respond. Now I’m “Pastor James or an insider?”
It makes me laugh because my responses are COMMON SENSE! Anyone (even if they NEVER set foot in a Harvest Church or heard of Pastor James) could argue w/ you liars. Debate 101! It’s just so obviously FAKE NEWS!

My guess is that after the disgruntled ex-elders from a decade ago knew they were going to tread legal waters for all their lying they started THIS. It’s all propaganda.

I thought the response from Harvest was too weak and nice.

        Anyway,
I will also go to The Chapel,Lifechangers, and Willowcreek.

At Willow I found great productions and good people. But eventually I also NEEDED more BIBLE and have found that at Harvest.

I thought Willow would be a great intro to Jesus and Christianity for nonbelievers like the ilk that are found here. Now I don’t know. Hybels was a great leader I just wish he would’ve been deeper biblically.

I HATE that I’m not seeing crosses in many churches now.

I would prefer if the Vertical Worship logo had a cross at the top.

  4. OK, first I find the church tattoo ironic, because the bible specifically prohibits tattoos.

I think you are spot on with this post. For quite a while I’ve been looking for a name for this idea, the “difficult and pointless thing you do which has no purpose other than to prove your loyalty.” I’ve heard this called “honest, hard-to-fake, expensive symbols of commitment” but that’s too long a name. This can include things like mormon two-year missions, fraternity hazings, huge expensive engagement rings, or gang tattoos (which is exactly what we’re seeing here.)

I think this functions on two levels. First, the more outrageous and pointless the thing is, the better proof of loyalty it is. Someone who says they follow you might be lying, but if they are willing to go as far as getting a tattoo, they probably aren’t. And once you have gotten someone to do something pointless and stupid, it’s easier to push them into the next thing. “You’ve already done A, how much harder is it to go ahead and do B?” A step at a time, you draw them into being controlled.

But also, people value a thing more when they have worked hard to achieve it. We prize the first car we worked hard to earn more than one our parents handed us. And we prize membership in a club when it was hard to get in to and expensive to join. So if someone has been carrying a coin, and enduring being chewed out and other nonsense, and getting a tattoo, just to get into “James McDonald’s inner circle”, the work they put into getting there will make them feel there is more value to staying there, and they will resist efforts to get them to abandon it.

And yes, this is dangerous. James McDonald may not be Jim Jones, but every cult leader who wound up like Jim Jones started out like McDonald.

  6. So…

All that read here…Please pay close attention.

Harvest members have decided this blog is the most far left of all the resistance.

They will continue to come out on this page to attempt to personalize and polarize the “crazy” people.

    Why?

Because it gives Harvest Leadership an enemy to point to…A way to set a battle field with enemies that Harvest has painted as atheist..

For the record..”Im im Church every Sunday, part of a weekly DG, and a Mens Ministry.”

In The End the truth is clear.

James Macdonald has lied while using the pulpit and tithe to his hearts desire. Harvest Leadership has minimized and covered up Child Sexual Exploitation. Disqualified.Disqualified.Disqualified

Right next to the pit of lies this man has dug over the years stands a mountain of truth. Lets cut through the spin and reject these attempts to reset a narrative in which James is the victim.

We will sit down with anyone, face to face, on my dime..

We are not trolls hiding in the shadows.

    Peace!

    • For me, the way some MacDonald followers choose to respond just puts the C in Crazy. They don’t help their cause, at least not here, because they are so bombastic and dismissive of others. Unfortunately, I’ve been in a couple of churches where the pastors weren’t above board (not as unique as MacDonald, though). I found it was best to acknowledge there were issues, and in the one case where it was so bad (adulterous pastor in a small town), I quietly left and found a healthier place of worship. The church wouldn’t do anything, and being a group of 1, I couldn’t either, but i could vote with my feet. Enough of us did that, and the church fell apart. After 30 years, it still hasn’t recovered, and i have long considered that God’s discipline for ignoring the obvious.

    • My hand on the Bible!
NOBODY has told me to retort your lies!

      NOBODY!

And it’s very easy to scapegoat that way.

Anyone that question the lies here is “a troll@ or “a Harvest plant.”

You crazies here however are those throwing stones! Lying! And Christianaphobes.

As stated : the INLY goal of this site is to DESTROY Pastor James Macdonald.

Some of us just don’t agree. That doesn’t make us bad people does it now snowflake?

      • Wow so vicious! I was a member at HBC for 6 1/2 years, worked in ministries. It took me many years to see that the MacDonald you see on stage is not the one in day to day life. He is a strong preacher, very gifted. I left because of MacDonalds character. But let me sum up my time there, having been a Christian for 40+ years, was a member of some good sound Bible teaching churches. This is something I cant say of any other church I was a member. I regret the 6 1/2 years I invested and the tens of thousands of dollars I tithed at HBC.

        We don’t need to.
PASTOR James MacDonald is doing a pretty good job of it on his lonesome.

P.S. Eagle never even mentioned PASTOR James MacDonald much until this scandal broke about a month ago. Now we’re getting the flamewar like usually happens on other blogs when “Evolution” or “Homosexuality” is uttered.

    • Jretoo, if you meet up with Fellow Human (who doesn’t sound very human), please be careful. I’ve met enough unhinged Christians in my six decades of life that I won’t deal with some unless it’s public, with the two or three witnesses. FH doesn’t seem to have time for anything else except online rants.

      • He ain’t coming out from behind the anonymity of the internet. But then again, I don’t think actual documents and eyewitnesses of all garbage behind the scenes at HBC would convince him anyway.

So ultimately there’s no need to feed the trolls, folks.

  7. Any “Dear Leader” who goes to the extremes of tattoos and coins for his followers to prove their loyalty is either totally narcissistic, mentally unhinged, or both. New Testament believers were known for their otherness by their personal holiness and tendency to be persecuted. The Apostle Paul did not have an “insiders club”, but he did establish and encourage many others in ministry. Given the size of Harvest ministries, I can’t imagine how MacDonald would have ever thought this would all have stayed a secret in the day of the internet and social media.

      • Secret!?!

        SECRET?!?

        Are you insane?!!

        It’s all over the place!

These aren’t tramp stamp tattoos placed above the buttocks that can be hidden by pulling ones T-shirt down! (Although it be hilarious if Pastor James did THAT!)

These men from this church have that cool tattoo because they like it and they identify w/ the message. They show them proudly!

Just like my pal that got a stupid Pearl Jam tattoo in the 90’s. I don’t get it but it’s not some evil organized GIJoe enemy Cobra type deal.

        Grow up!

Vertical Worship is Americans version of Hillsong. It is popular Christian music. Not as popular yet but growing.

        And the logo is COOL!

But if you think ALL tattoos are evil well then that’s a different arguement.

  8. The Vertical Tattoo

AKA Buck Sergeant’s stripes with a spike on top.

So a number of Harvest Bible Chapel pastors lined up one by one to get the Vertical tattoo. James MacDonald had wanted them and many blindly went along and got a tattoo.

AKA “The Mark of the James”.
If you’re a Preterist, the Mark of the Beast was a labels-filed-off echo of what Caesar Domitian (a Third Caligula, Nero being the second) was trying to enforce on his people at the time of writing — a Proof-of-Loyalty-to-Caesar tattoo to reverse-mark all Disloyals for Purging. (Jerk Bosses are often obsessed with Loyalty Unto ME, and when said Jerk Boss is Emperor of Rome with life-or-death power over the entire Empire…)

  10. How Harvest Bible Chapel Uses Coins

“Whose Name is on this coin?”
    “HBC.”
    “And whose Image?”
    “Pastor James.”
“Then render unto HBC what HBC is due, unto Pastor James what Pastor James is due, and unto God what God is due.”

  11. This is absolutely disgusting that people on here are gobbling up this garbage from your “confirmed” sources. The tattoo story is a flat out lie. As I said, I am a leader at a HBC Chicago campus. I have NEVER been pressured to get that tattoo. No one, including James, has ever even mentioned how “cool” it would be or that James would aprreciate it or that it would prove my loyalty. The discussion of me or anyone else who doesn’t have that tattoo to get one has never been brought up. You people make it seem like it’s some sort of cult that the leaders need or are pressured into getting one.

Both Wartburg Watch and Internet Monk had a troll who’d pull that all the time; once Eagle traced his IP address showing different handles, different names, same IP addy.
