Franklin Graham is Upset that Walmart Sold “Impeach 45” T-Shirts. Plus Graham Believes that Trump’s Affairs with Porn Stars is Nobody’s Business

Franklin Graham has been in the news recently. He supported the boycott of Walmart when they sold “Impeach 45” t-shirts. Then in May of 2018 he came out and said that Trumps’ affairs with porn stars are “no one’s business.” The Wondering Eagle believes that Franklin Graham is a fraud. And that at the end of the day Stormy Daniels honors the Lord when she strips in a strip club, where as Franklin Graham brings disgrace. Why do I say that? Because Stormy Daniels is not professing to be a born again Christian, where as Franklin Graham is.

“God is the hope for our country, and our leaders, including President Donald J. Trump, need our prayers,” his post added. “The bottom line? Prayer can make America great!

Franklin Graham

“I think this thing with Stormy Daniels and so forth is nobody’s business. … I think when the country went after President Clinton, the Republicans, that was a great mistake that should never have happened.”

Franklin Graham

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s new creation: “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.

Revelation 3:14,20 NLT

I’ve been writing a lot about the Neo-Calvinist movement lately. There is a lot on the traditional evangelical stream that deserves some attention. Franklin Graham has been in the news for a couple of issues recently. Let’s look at the first issue.

Franklin Graham Supports a Boycott of Walmart

In early July of 2018 the retailer Walmart found itself in the middle of controversy. A third party retailer was selling t-shirts that called for the impeachment of Donald Trump. Many Trump supporters called for the boycott of Walmart. In early July it was one of the top trending issues on Twitter. The boycott led to Walmart removing the “Impeach 45” t-shirts from the website. If you want to read more about the story you can do so here and here. One of the people who got involved in the boycott was none other than Franklin Graham. Franklin Graham went on Facebook and stated his support for the boycott. In the process  he responded by selling t-shirts through the Billy Graham Bookstore calling to “Pray for 45.” You can see the Facebook statement up above. Graham rebuked people and called for them to pray for Donald Trump.

Franklin Graham States that Trumps’ Affairs with Porn Stars are No One’s Business

Then before the Walmart controversy Franklin Graham was in the news yet again. As you may know there is the ongoing issue with the affairs that Donald Trump has had with others, to include porn stars. Stormy Daniels has had a career in the pornographic industry and made a number of films. She allegedly had an affair with Donald Trump and accepted a payoff of $130,000 and signed a non-disclosure agreement. If you want to read more about the situation you can do so here, here and here

In January of 2018 the Wall Street Journal was breaking more about the romance between Donald Trump and Stormy Daniels. Franklin Graham went to the defense of Trump. He cast doubt on the president’s attorney establishing a shell company in Delaware to transfer $130,000. This is what Graham has stated to MSNBC news at the time. “President Trump I don’t think has admitted to having an affair with this person,” Graham told MSNBC’s Alex Witt. “And so this is just a news story, and I don’t even know if it’s accurate.” When Graham was pressed on the moral character of Trump he claimed that trump is not perfect. Again this is what Graham told MSNBC. “We certainly don’t hold him up as the pastor of this nation and he is not,” Graham said. “But I appreciate the fact that the president does have a concern for Christian values, he does have a concern to protect Christians whether it’s here at home or around the world and I appreciate the fact that he protects religious liberty and freedom.”

Franklin Graham has been one of Trump’s strongest defenders. In May of 2018 he came out swinging at Trump’s critics and said that Trump’s affairs with porn stars are no one’s business. This was all stated in an interview with Associated Press on May 4. This is what Graham said. “I don’t have concern, in a sense, because these things happened many years ago – and there’s such bigger problems in front of us as a nation that we need to be dealing with than other things in his life a long time ago. I think some of these things – that’s for him and his wife to deal with. I think when the country went after President Clinton, the Republicans, that was a great mistake that should never have happened. And I think this thing with Stormy Daniels and so forth is nobody’s business. And we’ve got other business at hand that we need to deal with.”

On this thing with Stormy Daniels and so forth: This stuff happened 12 years ago. This isn’t behavior that has taken place since he’s been president. These things happened long before he became president. That doesn’t make it right. And I don’t defend those kinds of relationships he had. But the country knew the kind of person he was back then, and they still made the decision to make him the president of the United States.”

This got the attention of the news media who were stunned. If you recall Franklin Graham was one of the leading critic on Bill Clinton’s infidelities and called them out. When it comes to Donald Trump Franklin Graham just engages in hypocrisy in covering up the president’s behavior. Hemant Mehta who blogs as the Friendly Atheist wrote about the issues with Graham which you can read here. But one post that stood out to me was written by the Charlotte Observer editorial board.  They were astounded by Graham’s hypocrisy. This is how the editorial starts which lays out the ethical issues at hand.

Donald Trump said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose any support. It was, and remains, the most insulting thing anyone has said about Trump voters because it means they have no principles, no core. It didn’t bother them that he said that about them.

I didn’t know then that Trump was referring to the Rev. Franklin Graham, who has become a parody of himself. I should have known, given that Graham decided to side with the man who wanted American missionaries who contracted Ebola in 2014 to be left to die in Liberia.

The editorial talks about the Ebola situation in Africa and writes about the conflicts Graham has with Trump that he continues to overlook. Then the editorial gets into the Stormy Daniels situation and calls Graham’s actions absolutely shameful.

For months, Trump denied knowing that his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, paid porn actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to remain silent about an affair with Trump.

“I found the president to be truthful with me,” Graham said.

We “just have to give the man the benefit of the doubt,” he reasoned, despite Trump’s history of bragging about extra-marital conquests, his declaration that he needn’t repent for anything, his propensity to lie about issues consequential and not.

But all doubt was erased when Rudy Giuliani said Trump reimbursed Cohen for the money. Giuliani did that after consulting with Trump. They’ve since tried to muddy the waters with a partial reversal, but serious people should not believe them. The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post have nailed down further confirmation of the scandal. Cohen had hundreds of thousands of dollars to use to keep such issues private and Trump knew about this for months, even as he and his press secretary repeatedly told the American public otherwise.

Still, Graham recently told the AP: “I think this thing with Stormy Daniels and so forth is nobody’s business. … I think when the country went after President Clinton, the Republicans, that was a great mistake that should never have happened.”

Graham led the charge against Clinton, declaring in the Wall Street Journal in 1998 that private conduct has public consequences.

“Clinton’s months-long extramarital sexual behavior in the Oval Office now concerns him and the rest of the world,” Graham wrote. “If he will lie to or mislead his wife and daughter, those with whom he is most intimate, what will prevent him from doing the same to the American public?”

Graham says Trump’s affair happened before he was president. He cares not at all that Trump has been proven a pathological liar since he was sworn into office, telling a list of lies and misstatements that has surpassed 3,000, according to the Washington Post fact-checker.

This isn’t about political hypocrisy; it’s that Graham is teaching his flock that nothing really matters. He’s become a moral leader who no longer believes in morality.

That he and his most ardent supporters aren’t ashamed of what they’ve become in service of Trump is most shameful of all.

Why Stormy Daniels Honors God, Whereas Franklin Graham is a Fraud

Let me offer commentary on both the issues that I touched on above. When it comes to prayer for Trump I wondered how often Franklin Graham prayed for Barack Obama over the span of eight years? I myself am not much of a praying person and I seldom have tried to pray for a world leader. But I am puzzled how Graham’s beliefs to pray for a president are conditional.  After all he was spouting off that Obama was a Muslim. That by the way is false, so Graham is a liar. But even if that were true wouldn’t a pastor or minister pray for someone of another faith? Wouldn’t they pray for the atheist or the conversion of someone in another faith? So in this area of prayer Graham is a fraud. He calls for prayer when for years he attacked a president by spreading falsehood. That is just shameful. But as bad as that is, its my belief that Franklin is guilty of much worse.

When you look at the situation of Stormy Daniels and what Franklin Graham says I am horrified. Franklin Graham was an outspoken critic of Bill Clinton and the Monica Lewinsky scandal in 1998. You can read what John Fea wrote at his blog here. I can’t wrap my head around what Franklin Graham is saying about Donald Trump and Stormy Daniels. The issue in evangelicalism is that the “Court Evangelicals” as John Fea describes them only care about a Supreme Court seat. In that mindset everything is justified. Every sexual assault, every time the genitals of a female are grabbed, and every affair with a porn star. So here is how I size up the situation. You have Franklin Graham who is a “minister” and Stormy Daniels who is a pornographic movie star. When I consider Franklin Graham’s behavior I come to the conclusion that the porn star is more honest and brings more honor to God than Franklin Graham. Here is why I am saying this controversial statement. Stormy Daniels is being herself. She isn’t professing to be a born again Christian holding up her life as a model. She goes from strip club to strip club and gives lap dances. Then she has made a large number of pornographic films. Stormy Daniels isn’t living a lie. She is not engaging in repulsive hypocrisy as Franklin Graham is doing. In contrast Franklin Graham is barnstorming around the country calling for “spiritual decisions.” Every day he opens his mouth and rotates his foot. Every day he puts something on Facebook or Twitter that makes many people cringe in disgust. Regularly he pimps himself out to defend Donald Trump. And he does all this while proclaiming “thou must be born again” while defending one of the most egregious sinners ever.

Franklin Graham is a fraud. I know that as do you. This blog writes about Franklin Graham from time to time. I wrote about his finances in, “Franklin Graham’s Salary, the IRS Change to Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Should Churches be Supporting “Operation Christmas Child?” I also wrote about Franklin Graham and his admiration for Vladimir Putin of Russia. You can read that in, “Franklin Graham’s Affection for Vladimir Putin, Plus is Franklin Graham a Modern Day Charles Lindbergh with His Love for Authoritarian Leaders?” But in the context of this post I have to believe that God sees through Franklin Graham’s hypocrisy. In contrast when Stormy Daniels strips in Cincinnati, Chicago, Kansas, Houston, or Shreveport; or makes a pornographic film in Los Angeles I think she brings more honor to the Lord than Franklin Graham. Why? Because she is honest, and she is not engaging in the deceitful hypocritical behavior that Franklin Graham does each day. That is it for the day guys. Know that you are loved!

  1. I don’t think that I would characterize it as Stormy bringing “more honor to God” than Graham. That, to me, is a stretch. But what I do know, and what I think you may be getting at, is this: Jesus ate with and met with and had fellowship with what society saw as the worst kind of sinners, because they needed Him and they knew full well that they needed Him, and they received Him as Good News. To them, He brought compassion and mercy. Conversely, Jesus regularly and strongly confronted the self-righteous religious leaders who were proud of their position and used it to gain advantage, lording it over others, and who opposed Him and saw Him as a threat to their authority. To them, He brought rebuke and judgment.

    • I can see it as hyperbole to make a point, which puts Eagle in the company of many Prophets and the tradition of Prophetic Utterances.
