The Bridge Fresno is bringing Hayden McAndrew on staff to be the Student Ministries Pastor. This is a brief post looking over Hayden McAndrew. He will be a good fit, I am concerned however that he appears to like Steven Furtick and ministies and program related to Elevation Church on Twitter. This post briefly looks at a financial scandal that continues to play out in North Carolina.
“It isn’t always a change of scenery needed to make life better. Sometimes it simply requires opening your eyes.”
“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. “
Martin Luther King
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28 NLT
Hayden McAndrew is joining the staff of The Bridge Fresno effective on March 26, 2018. Since this blog writes about my former Evangelical Free church let’s look at the new Student Ministry Pastor.
Who is Hayden McAndrew?
Hayden is originally from Michigan and attended Lawrence Senior High School. Hayden served on staff at Valley Family Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Hayden attended the South Carolina School of Leadership in Columbia and graduated in 2010. He eventually moved down to North Carolina and is on staff at Word of Life Community Church in Burlington on March 15, 2015. Hayden was the Student Ministries Pastor. He will be moving across country to Fresno, California to start at The Bridge Fresno. For some other personal information on Hayden this is what I was able to find when researching through the internet archives. He is fascinated with technology and likes eating buffalo wings. His favorite movie is Dumb and Dumber and he likes Adam Sandler as an actor and Jennifer Anniston as an actress. When it comes to sports he also likes the University of Michigan, college basketball at the University of North Carolina. In professional sports he likes the Buffalo Bills (when they win 😛 ) the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Tigers. Before ending this section I wonder if people on staff at The Bridge Fresno such as Jeff Loven, Andrew Smith or Sam Jessup are aware of the entire Michigan and Ohio State rivalry. I am neutral in the situation but I have known people on both sides of the divide.
The Good About Andrew, and Some Concern
I did some research online and examined Hayden’s social media and I found good news and something of concern. Now The Bridge Fresno is an Evangelical Free that is rooted in the Mennonite tradition. Its influenced by Fresno Pacific University so the plus is that you won’t find much there in regards to Neo-Calvinism. When I examined Hayden’s Twitter feed there was no interest in Neo-Calvinism. No John Piper, Matt Chandler, Kevin DeYoung, Ray Outland, Mark Dever, etc… That is encouraging to see. Now here is the flip side that gives me pause. When I was studying Hayden’s Twitter feed I noticed a lot of interest in Hillsong, but especially Steven Furtick’s Elevation Church. The issues at Elevation Church is quite troubling. I am sure Andrew Smith knows about the issues with Steven Furtick as he came to The Bridge Fresno from North Carolina. There are some extremely disturbing issues coming out of Steven Furtick’s ministry that shows gross abuse of finances. You can read a blog about this topic. How bad is the issue? Well it grabbed the attention of the New York media. Steven Furtick purchased a house in the outskirts of Charlotte that cost $1.7 million dollars. He also declared that it was a “gift from God.” The house has five bedrooms and 7 bathrooms and the indoctrinated congregation of Elevation Church is standing behind Steve Furtick. This is one of the bigger houses in the state of North Carolina and its often in the news, especially the Charlotte Observer for the extreme luxury that Steven Furtick lives in. Andrew probably knows about this but let me share something this Fresno native learned in living on the East Coast. Charlotte is a financial hub and the corporate home for Bank of America and the east coast center of operations for Wells Fargo. After all Wachovia used to the be a dominant bank on the East Coast that was absorbed by Wells Fargo. So when you think of all the wealth, corporate personalities who call the area home, and then you have a pastor that has one of the largest homes in North Carolina shouldn’t that give Christians pause? I hope Hayden thinks about these issues. Christians really need to learn how to practice discernment and critical thinking skills. Or maybe its an ongoing issue of what Mark Noll referred to as the Scandal of the Evangelical Mind? You can read more about that issue in “From Mormonism in Montana to Sovereign Grace in the Washington, D.C. Area; The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind Comes Full Circle.”
The Wondering Eagle wishes Hayden McAndrew good luck. I hope he has a good, long and fruitful time at The Bridge Fresno. I wish him well just as I wish Andrew Smith, Jeff Loven, Sam Jessup and David Peters. Take care of yourself and I will be writing about The Bridge Fresno again soon. Since Hayden likes Adam Sandler I will put up a couple of classic scenes from his movies 50 First Dates and The Waterboy. To The Bridge Fresno I wish you well.
