The Theological Coup Taking Place at McLean Bible and Why The Wondering Eagle is Calling for David Platt to be Rejected for the Health of the Church

A post explaining why David Platt needs to be rejected by McLean Bible at the next congregation meeting. There are many reasons why David should be rejected and this goes into all the details. To understand modern evangelicalism one should know Maccavilli and George Orwell. McLean Bible is in the midst of a theological coup and I believe that Lon Solomon is being forced out against his will.

“It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.”

Niccolo Machiavelli

“I’m not interested in preserving the status quo; I want to overthrow it.”

Niccolo Machiavelli

“In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

George Orwell

But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss.48 But Jesus said, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”

Luke 22:47-48 NLT

David Platt at T4G…does McLean Bible care about the rape of children in Sovereign Grace?

There are many reasons why McLean Bible (MBC) should reject David Platt as the new Teaching Pastor. MBC is currently in the process of undergoing a coup. In order to understand what is happening you need to understand the famed Italian diplomat named Machiavelli. The ends justify the means and they are to be followed to obtain the goal. Ethics be damned, but the prize in this case is the 35th largest mega church in the United States which is in the Washington, D.C. area. MBC is in the midst of a hostile take over, and Lon Solomon is being forced out against his will. In my previous post I wrote about my connections to MBC. You can read that in “The Wondering Eagle’s History with McLean Bible Church.”  After attending the town hall meeting these are all the reasons why David Platt should be rejected.

Platt’s Invovlement in T4G and his silence on the C.J. Mahaney Issue; Does McLean Bible Care About the Rape of Children?

This is fair game to point out if the issue of the Islamic Mosque is going to come up, as it did. David Platt participates in T4G which is held in Louisville, Kentucky every other year. T4G I believe is Mark Dever’s baby, for those who do not know Dever is the senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church here in the Washington, D.C. area. At T4G David Platt has shared the platform with C.J. Mahaney. From what I have heard in the past there are active criminal investigations that are ongoing for child sex abuse cover-up in the late Sovereign Grace Ministries (now Sovereign Grace Churches) . This to date is one of the biggest ongoing scandals that is deeply troubling. And why people think Mahaney is legitimate when he also has practiced blackmail is beyond me. If you want to read about Mahaney’s blackmail you can read “Has God Foreordained an Alleged Child Sex Abuse Cover up in Sovereign Grace Ministries/Churches? Is that why CJ Mahaney is so Sacred? David Platt at the town hall claimed that he cared about the Gospel. He claimed that is all he wants to see advanced at MBC. Yet the fact of the manner is that David Platt has been silent on the C.J. Mahaney scandal. He’s shared speaking platforms, and more and has been silent on a situation that is tearing apart families, giving atheists credibility, and more. The question that needs to be asked if David Platt is coming on staff is this claim. Does MBC care about the rape of children? Is the rape of a 5 year old boy/girl “Gospel Centered” and is that why David Platt is silent on this topic? But in a story that has gotten press from the Washington Post, Daily Beast, and the Washingtonian and its an issue that can’t be ignored. To turn aside and look the other way is evil. If MBC cares about the Gospel then they would care about rape. This is an issue pounding at the door due to the crowd that David Platt moves in.

David Platt is Being Dishonest about his Neo-Calvinist Beliefs

As I sat in that town hall I was disappointed by David Platt’s answer on Calvinism. The “aw shucks” let’s agree to disagree was down right dishonest. A pastor should know that its best not to lie. Here MBC is experiencing is biggest change in 37 years and on one of the most controversial issues that is tearing apart the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and an issue in the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) MBC is going to downplay the entire issue. In a 2 minute segment that is all that is going to be said. That is the equivalent of a nation-state saying “we’re going from a Constitutional form of government to a dictatorship, but let’s agree to disagree and move forward.”

There was no talk about the problems of Neo-Calvinist theology. No discussion on how Neo-Calvinism can make the problem of evil worse. David Platt due to his theology can state that he believes God ordains pain.  So the rape of a child is ordained? Adam Lanza going into an elementary school in Connecticut was ordained? Are the people who were killed in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 ordained? You can read more about how Neo-Calvinism makes the problem of evil worse in “How Reformed Theology/Neo-Calvinism Make the Problem of Evil Worse: John Piper, Adam Lanza and a Massacre in Connecticut.

But there are other issues as well. This article by Justin Taylor explains more about David Platt then what was said at the town hall I sat through.  Then there is also the issue of the “sinners prayer.” You can read David Platt’s concerns with it, in this Justin Taylor’s article.  But there was no discussion on any of the following issues.

  1. What does Platt believe about Jesus?
  2. What does Platt believe about Atonement?
  3. How would he defined the Gospel?
  4. What does he believe about the trinity?
  5. What does he believe about heaven and hell?

There is so much that wasn’t covered or asked. Because this is a coup these questions weren’t asked. When I think of the crowd that David Platt hangs around with I find it incredible that he would he claims that he agrees with the church doctrinal statement. After all David Platt is close to Mark Dever, and from what I have heard over at Capitol Hill Baptist Church for years they have a low view of MBC. These issues are not adding up when you do the math.  To see MBC’s previous statement on Calvinism which was taken down from their website read, “Preserving McLean Bible’s Statement on Calvinism.

The Attempt to Script and Control the Town Hall on September 21, 2017

One thing that bothered me deeply about the town hall was the vibe and how it went. My feeling in my gut tells me that much of this was scripted and determined beforehand. I believe this town hall was scripted in advance and that the questions were controlled. This is why I published my question that I submitted. After what I sat through I could easily imagine Larry Cooper and Tom McMahon sitting down and reviewing the questions beforehand and deciding what was going to be answered or not. I could also imagine MBC speaking with David Platt beforehand on the topics that would be raised and coaching him through all this. But this was not a true town hall, and in my mind it raises questions about how healthy was MBC church meetings. Were those other town halls scripted as well?

The Authoritarian Behavior at the Town Hall

The one thing that disturbed me quite a bit in the town hall when I was there is the very authorterian tone that it took. I have sat in a lot of church meetings in my life. Sometimes as a member other times for a session because I was an attender and they wanted to communicate something to the church outside of the main service. But never in all the churches I have been involved in my lifetime did I hear some of what transpired. When Wade stated that this information was to stay within and reporters were not to write about it, I was deeply troubled. MBC’s mission as I always understood it was to impact secular Washington, D.C. for Jesus Christ. That is what I heard when I attended years ago. Why is this church going to be secretive about its process and hide the information shared from the world? Why did Wade allegedly request reporters to not write or record information? If a reporter from the Washington Post or Christianity Today was in attendance would MBC had them arrested and thrown out of the church? The church from my understanding should be the most transparent organization that exists; especially if its here in Washington, D.C. What does it say for MBC when you have corporations in the business world and federal government agencies that can be more transparent about their business activities?  If this is changing should reporters file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA’s) against MBC like they would for the Department of Health and Human Services or the FBI?

Abuse of Hebrews 13:17 in a Cult Like Manner

As I sat through the town hall meeting there is another aspect that caught my attention that troubled me deeply. It was the twisting of Hebrews 13:17 about trusting the elders in the situation with David Platt. Should the elders be trusted blindly? What if any of the elders are doing shady or allegations of criminal activity behind the scene of any church? Should they automatically be trusted? This behavior by MBC is another indicator of a church that is in the process of being hijacked. This is about a battle for power. Machiavelli famously penned 500 years ago that it is better to be feared than loved. And that is what was happening at the town hall meeting. People are being forced to fear. Correct me if I am wrong, but fear is not one of the marks of the fruit of the spirit in Galatians. This abuse by the leaders of MBC is profoundly troubling and disturbing. This behavior also is very cult like and is far from healthy, as it crushes independent thought and questioning. Jesus would have run afoul of that town hall meeting because of how he asked questions in the New Testament. To read more about the abuse of Hebrews 13:17 go to “Hebrews 13:17: Spiritual Authority’s Most Abused Verse.

Tom McMahon’s Dishonesty and Manipulation

At the end of the town hall meeting another problem I believe is the outright dishonesty and manipulation that was done by Tom McMahon. Tom was forcing people to vote for David Platt. Theologically he was invoking God in the process and said that it is a sin to not vote for David Platt. You know what this reminded me of in a way? In 1933 when Germany was voting itself out of democracy in the passing of the Enabling Act, the National Socialists (Nazis) walked up and down the aisles of the Reichstag to intimidate and force people to vote to end German democracy. Tom McMahon is doing the equivalent by telling Christians that they MUST vote for David Platt. Spiritually in my mind I could almost imagine Tom McMahon walking around during the congregation vote to get people to vote a specific way that is against MBC’s interest.

There is also another problem that needs to be called out. If one is not into Calvinism is one in sin? If Tom is saying that people are to vote for David Platt, especially given his theological beliefs are people in sin because they are not into Calvinism? This is disgraceful and Tom McMahon should be ashamed of himself. To abuse his power and position already is an indicator that he is not qualified to be an elder. The Lord gave people a brain, did he not? Thinking for themself is not sin. This one made me boil as I sat in the seat and listened to what he was saying.

Larry Cooper’s Dishonesty and Violation of McLean Constitution

Larry Cooper is also dishonest and in the eyes of The Wondering Eagle has also failed as an elder. Here is why…Larry is not following MBC’s Constitution. Larry’s answer about MBC partnering with the SBC and how they are not a denomination, so partnering with them is fine is BS. Larry is violating the Constitution of the church in this manner when he acts in such a way. Scheming comes in many different forms, and I believe that Larry stood before the audience and flat out lied. The fact of that matter is that MBC should not be be partnering with the SBC or any organization that challenges the identity of the organization. MBC is in the process of having its identity changed. Its subtle and quiet; but its changing for sure.

Larry Cooper and Tom McMahon are Lon Solomon’s Judas Iscariot

The Wondering Eagle believes that both Tom McMahon and Larry Cooper are Lon Solomon’s Judas Iscariot. Despite the working relationship that existed for years I believe that they have turned on Lon and put him in a difficult spot. In this situation the the betrayal is justified because of the theology in their warped minds. A couple of years ago I wrote a post called “Theology of Betrayal” that explains the options Larry and Tom both have. Right now they are Lon Solomon’s Judas Iscariot. The only thing they have not done is kiss Lon while betraying him, that is the only thing they are lacking. In this situation Lon Solomon is he one who is being wronged. I saw that and got a sick feeling in my stomach which I will get into next.

Lon Solomon is Being Forced out Against his Will in a Coup

The one thing that weighed on my mind as I sat through this circus that was cleverly scripted is what I was seeing. I was watching the execution of a pastor and him being forced out of his position against his will. I felt sick at times during the meeting. I don’t think Lon is ready to leave, nor do I think he really wants to. Lon is a very cornered man who is boxed in by the transition team, that is what I believe is going on. Yes Lon has been arrogant and done some things that I disagree with in the past, but I don’t wish this kind of behavior on anyone. Lon is being shoved to the side and the entire Pastor Emeritus in this situation is going to be garbage. This isn’t Georgetown, George Mason University, University of Wisconsin – Madison or Yale University. Lon is pushed off to the side and as MBC  goes to the dark side as its theological hijacked then you will see that David Platt and Lon Solomon do not agree on doctrine, despite what David Platt said. But by that time it will be too late as the tipping point has already passed. Lon is right MBC means a lot to him, but the way the he is being treated is another disturbing manner. To really understand modern evangelical Christian theology you need to comprehend Machiavelli and George Orwell, because in the end this is a power play; that’s all it is.

Addressing a Segment of Lon Solomon’s Prayer; is this Post a Satanic Attack?

I want to address something Lon said in his prayer, and I am doing it in anticipation of how some in MBC will respond to this post. Is this blog post a satanic attack? Absolutely not…I am a guy who was burned, fried and went through severe spiritual abuse several years ago that is trying to prevent that from happening in this situation. People are going to be hurt in the changing polity that is being done in a dishonest manner. In my spiritual abuse situation I went through a false accusation that threatened my ability to earn income and more, it was the darkest season of my life. The situation was never resolved and dragged out into my Mom’s hospital room as she was dealing with the illness that would take her life. When my Mom was ill and in pain she didn’t have to worry over my challenges in trying to resolve it. My story, which comes out of Eric Simmons Redeemer Arlington when I was unsuccessfully recruited to that church is what triggered this blog. There is a lot of questionable and dark stuff happening in many churches today. Quite simply you will not understand this unless you have gone through it yourself. And some people in MBC are now figuring this out as the exodus is beginning. So is this a spiritual attack in this post? No this is an effort to get vital information into the hands and minds of people who are at MBC who will go to that congregation meeting on September 27. The church needs to vote a loud and resounding no to David Platt. All the reasons I have listed above. Voting no can preserve and save MBC. Yes I know this church has issues but it doesn’t need to go to the dark side of Calvinism. Let’s prevent that from happening. That’s it guys McLean know that I love you, and lets vote down David Platt.
