To the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) It’s Your Church; 20% of California is Neo-Calvinist, as The Wondering Eagle Documents the Theological Hijacking of a Denomination

20% of the EFCA in the State of California is Neo-Calvinist. To get these numbers I had to work through EFCA West and The Western District of the EFCA. This post is a wake up call and blowing on the whistle of how the EFCA is being theologically hijacked. The EFCA doesn’t have to go down this path, if so more spiritual refugees will be created.

“Here are the keys, our family’s future is in your hands.”

From Robert Campbell’s blog

“In every single thing you do, you are choosing a direction. Your life is a product of choices.”

Dr. Kathleen Hall

“Every choice moves us closer to or farther away from something. Where are your choices taking your life? What do your behaviors demonstrate that you are saying yes or no to in life?”

Eric Allenbaugh

Yes, but remember—those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen. 21 For if God did not spare the original branches, he won’t[a] spare you either.

22 Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.

Romans 11:20-22 NLT

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco

Since The Wondering Eagle has kicked off well over two years ago I have waited a long time to do today’s post. I have longed wanted to know what is the rate of Neo-Calvinism/Neo-Puritanism of the EFCA in the State of California alone. Most of my history in the EFCA is in California where I was involved in Fresno Evangelical Free (today The Bridge Fresno) in 1999 and 2000. You can read about my past in the EFCA in “A Personal Reflection on Fresno Evangelical Free Church; Known Today as The Bridge Fresno.” Here in the Washington, D.C. area where I live I am not involved in the EFCA because the EFCA in the area is Neo-Calvinist. I am a refugee from the denomination here. You can read more about the EFCA in the D.C. area in “Crossway Fellowship in Manassas, Virginia Gets a New Senior Pastor, and a Look at the EFCA in the Washington, D.C. Area.However the key to finding out what the rate of Neo-Calvinism is in California meant that I would have to work through two districts in the denomination. I would have to process Neal Brower’s The Western District as well as Steve Highfill’s EFCA West. I did EFCA West in June of 2016. You can read that post inAnalyzing the Growth of Reformed Theology/Neo Calvinism in the Evangelical Free Church of America: EFCA West.” I just finished Neal Brower’s district recently. You can read that in “Analyzing the Growth of Reformed Theology/Neo-Calvinism in the Evangelical Free Church of America: The Western District.”  I wanted to launch the post about last week, but I became busy writing about how Hurricane Harvey affected the EFCA in Texas. Between the two districts there are a total of 208 EFCA churches in California alone. In the California segment of EFCA West there are 35 Neo-Calvinist/Neo-Puritanism churches. In the California section of The Western District there are 7. That means there is a total of 41 Neo-Calvinist churches in California between two districts. When I do the math that means that 20% of the EFCA in California is Neo-Calvinist/Neo-Puritan.

On August 25, 2015 Senior Pastor Robert Campbell of Santa Margarita Community Church in Santa Margarita, California wrote a blog post called “It’s Your Church.” In that post Robert writes about how a seminary professor told the class he was in “here is the keys, the future is in your hands.” While Robert used that story to try and inspire people to serve in Santa Margarita Community Church I would like to take a different spin. Its’ your church EFCA, it doesn’t have to be Neo-Calvinist. It doesn’t have to be theologically hijacked and taken over in time by churches being invaded by Neo-Calvinists or primarily planting Neo-Calvinist churches. This is a discussion that needs to be had and I hope the EFCA can be saved before its too late. The Southern Baptist Convention in my mind is largely gone. The EFCA is not as far down the rabbit hole. But this blog is blowing the whistle on the problem and its time for people to realize what is going on. In California they have a saying, that what happens there filters out into the rest of the country. I am a native Californian and I am worried that is happening to the EFCA in other parts of the country. EFCA it’s your church and it doesn’t have to go down this path. If there are people that would like to talk about this or write their story about a Neo-Calvinist church in California, you are free to do so here if you choose. That is it, this is a brief post but its one that I have waited for 2 years to find out. Well now I know and so does the rest of the EFCA and those who care in California. That’s it guys, take care!

  1. I wonder if the average congregant knows or cares about the theology of their church. I also wonder if it matters. I imagine most people attend church where they feel comfortable, where their friends and family attend, or where they fit in. There’s probably a core of ardent “theologians” at every church, but are they representative of the whole?

    • TT you hit on a good question. Most people probably go to church based on what is convenient and nearby. Often times its not due to theology. Grace vs. The Doctrines of Grace are huge but do many people know the difference? I owuld say no. People go places because of friends, family and more. That is what guides people.
