A recommended read that came out a while back from Politico. This deals with the history of the evangelical culture wars and corrects the notion that the legalization of abortion triggered them. This also includes a Saturday Night Live parody on the culture wars called, “God is a Boob Man.”
“But the abortion myth quickly collapses under historical scrutiny. In fact, it wasn’t until 1979—a full six years after Roe—that evangelical leaders, at the behest of conservative activist Paul Weyrich, seized on abortion not for moral reasons, but as a rallying-cry to deny President Jimmy Carter a second term. Why? Because the anti-abortion crusade was more palatable than the religious right’s real motive: protecting segregated schools. So much for the new abolitionism.”
I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
2 Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
Psalm 116:1-2 NIV
Saturday Night Live’s take on the culture wars
At some point in the next year I would like to write a detailed history of the evangelical culture wars. How did they come about, and what inspired them? Many claim that it was the legalization of abortion that triggered them. Politico had an article a few years back that I believe many people should read and familiarize themselves with. The article is called “The Real Origins of the Religious Right.” Politco writes that it was not the legalization of abortion that triggered the culture wars. Instead it was when Bob Jones University, the flagship school of the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church had its funding threatened because it still practiced segregation. I hope you guys have a good day!
