Evangelicals and Art: The Sound of Music

This Saturday I am going to highlight Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. Its a classic that doesn’t need much introduction. Mary Martin was the original Maria von Trapp and Julie Andrews played the role in the movie. The musical is set on the eve of Germany annexing Austria in 1938. Maria accepts the job as a governess and falls in love with the children and ultimately their father Captain von Trapp. The Nazis want Captain von Trapp to go into the German Navy. He and the family flee Austria into Switzerland. World War II is about a year away from breaking out in Europe. This has had many Broadway revivals. I hope you have a good weekend!
